I have two ESXi 5.5 U2 hosts. Both are connected to a Drobo B1200i via a virtual distributed switch. Each host has a direct Ethernet connection from a physical host NIC to a dedicated iSCSI port on the Drobo. Both hosts find the target and populate the LUNs view. I've created a iSCSIDatastore extended across the 4, 4TB LUNS on the Drobo. Both hosts can see and browse and store\retrieve VMs from this shared storage. I can vmkping from host 1 to the target and get a response. If I vmkping from the 2nd host I get nothing, no response. Is this normal behavior? I am also seeing a lot of events that the host lost access to the iSCSIDatastore and then restored it seconds later. I also see latency jump to warning levels when taking any action on a single VM stored on this datastore. We are using jumbo frames set at 9000.

vSphere Replication 5.5
MKS Failed to connect to server 902
In my home lab I am able to view the Console when connected to a host but through vCenter I get the error "Unable to connect to the MKS: Failed to connect to server [server name]:902.
I have no special firewalls on either the client or the vCenter server. The Windows provided firewall is turned off on the vCenter server and I've tried turning it off on the client and it doesn't make a difference. I experience this issue both in the fat client and over the web client. I've even built a second vCenter server just to see if it experienced the same issue and it does.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
VDI and vROPs multi-site setup question
Hi,
I'll try and keep this simple. We have 2 sites, each with its own independent VDI POD (3 node cluster for 150 VM's). Each site has it's own vROPs server (a master in Site1 and a data collector in Site2).
Within this POD, we are running 5 separate pools of linked clone VDI VM's sharing the same Gold Image. Each pool is in it's own AD Domain and therefore has its own Connection Servers, Composer Server and Events DB's.
I am setting up vROPs 6 for Horizon View (we are on 5.3). I'm in a PoC test deployment at the moment and am following the vROPs for View documentation but it gets a little unclear and I'm not all that great with vROPs. The way I am looking to set this is up is:
1) Create a vROPs View Adapter for Site1.
2) Create a vROPs View Adapter for Site2.
3) Add in a connection server from each domain/site (5 in total) by installing the broker agent and connecting it, to it's site specific vROPs server.
4) Add in each VDI vCenter to each corresponding vROPs site server.
It is a little complicated but I just want to make sure I'm not WAAY off in what I'm trying to do and if it is the best course of action. The Horizon Documentation states "IMPORTANT Creating more than one View adapter instance per cluster node or remote collector is not supported. " Can I have multiple connection servers (same compute pod) connected to the same adapter?
If anyone can weigh in on this I'd appreciate it! If clearer explaination is needed, I'm happy to provide more info.
Cheers!
Ryan
View 6.0 'Please Wait' During Logon
Hit upon a problem which appears to be with the View 6.0 (6.0.1 and 6.0.2 as well) agent. When we install the agent into an image and deploy it when a user logs in policy processing occurs followed by preparing desktop. After this we get the 'Please Wait' dialog as if Themes are being set running for 30 seconds. This is on a full clone, linked clone and the master image. If we remove the agent and install the View 5.2 or the 5.3 agent then this does not occur.
Have run through Process Monitor at logon and can see svchost is calling netsvcs (svchost.exe -k netsvcs) at around the time the dialog is displayed. This is the Themes service and we notice the theme changes just before the desktop is displayed.
Support have pointed us at VMware KB: Legacy applications fail to start with the VMware View 6.0 or 6.0.1 agent installed and we've removed the regkeys detailed. This resulted in the 'Please Wait' disappearing for a while and then returning with the same delay.
There are no GPO's, Persona Management or scripts that are configuring Themes. We're keeping to Windows Aero with BgInfo setting the desktop background.
Does anyone know what might be causing the Themes to be reverted to then set by the View Agent (because this is what appears to be happening) or how to remove this fault and keep it removed? Or is anyone aware of the View Agent setting Themes?
Vcloud Connector product: when I try to register a node I get "invalid credential error"
I am trying to setup the vcloud connector...
I am having an issue registering a node... error below:
could not log in to https://<IP>. Reason : Invalid Credentials. Reason : Invalid Credentials
I went on to the node and configured the "cloud url" first
when I go onto the server and attempt to register the node.. I just get this error.
This is all out of the box passwords so I am using the defaults password as in the guide.
any clue what is going on here?
vmsvc: [ warning] [guestinfo] RecordRoutingInfo: Unable to collect IPv4 routing table.
Hi There,
I am running centos 6.5 in a virtual machine under vSphere 5.5. I am trying to use command "ip route add 123.123.123.123/24 unreachable" to mitigate an attack on my server. As soon as I enter the command I start getting this warning message every 30 seconds. I seems that vmware tools cannot parse the output of /proc/net/route when it has an Iface value of "*" which is added by the ip route command. Can anyone tell me how to disable this message. It doesn't appear to have any negative effects except that it clutters my log and just feels very "wrong".
TIA,
Jerry
Charset problem while logging MSSQL Server 2008
Hi,
we have installed vRealize Log Insight 2.5 GA (Version 2.5.0-2347850) on a VM (Content Pack MS Server installed) .
I've installed the agent on a MS Windows VM with MSSQL Server 2008. I've modified the liagent.ini as follow.
[filelog|MSSQL]
directory=E:\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Log
charset=UTF-16LE
event_marker=^[^\s]
Checking Log Insight I see a problem with characters (char set ?)
Someone know why ?
thanks
Maurizio

vmhgfs module not compilable for VMware Tools 9.9.0 (Fusion7.1) after Ubuntu Linux kernel update to 3.13.0-46-generic (Febr. 2015) (Shared Folder Feature not working in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Guest) on MacOSX Yosemite (Host))?
Hello Community and VMware Fusion Support Team,
we are using VMware Fusion 7.1.0 on MacOSX Yosemite to virtualize Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, because Ubuntu is our ideal software development environment.
On February, 13th 2015 we lost the Shared Folder Feature between Ubuntu and MacOSX. Probably, the update of the Linux kernel to 3.13.0-46-generic causes this problem although the existing vmhgfs module of the VMware Tools in Ubuntu wouldn't be damaged by the Linux kernel update. We use VMware Fusion 7.0.0 with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and MacOSX for one year without problems.
We updates to VMware Fusion 7.1.0 in the hope to fix the Shared Folder Feature problem in vers. 7.0.0.
We tried to reinstall VMware tools 9.9.0 on all our computers but the Shared Folder Feature is not working. All other VMware tool features are working fine.
Actually, the vmhgfs module couldn't be compiled during VMware tools installation because…
1. In Ubuntu 14.04 LTS the terminal command lsmod | grep "vm." shows no vmhgfs module
2. During vmhgfs module compilation there were several "errors" near "/vmhgfs-only/" and "make[]:"
Here is one of our terminal journals for you:

3. And /mnt/hgfs is empty but folder sharing is enabled for Mac's "Documents" directory for example.
If we run vmware-hgfsclient in a terminal, we get the list of shared folders but /mnt/hgfs is empty.
Have you an idea to compile the hgfs module manually with the new Linux kernel 3.13.0-46-generic? Or can we expect a patch within a few days?
Best regards,
Toni

The filesystem driver (vmhgfs module) is used only for the shared folder
feature. The rest of the software provided by VMware Tools is designed to work
independently of this feature.
If you wish to have the shared folders feature, you can install the driver by
running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make
and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine.
These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD.

The vmxnet driver is no longer supported on kernels 3.3 and greater. Please
upgrade to a newer virtual NIC. (e.g., vmxnet3 or e1000e)
The vmblock enables dragging or copying files between host and guest in a
Fusion or Workstation virtual environment. Do you wish to enable this feature?
[yes]
VMware automatic kernel modules enables automatic building and installation of
VMware kernel modules at boot that are not already present. This feature can be
enabled/disabled by re-running vmware-config-tools.pl.
Would you like to enable VMware automatic kernel modules?
[yes]

VMWare Player + Ubuntu 14.04 memory leak
Hello.
I've got a newly built host running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I've installed VMWare player 6.0.3 build-1895310 64-bit. The host has an an i5 processor and 16GB RAM. I've got a Windows 7 Pro VM with 4GB RAM allocated to it. This VM is running video management software that is writing about 2MB/s to the virtual disk. When I start the VM I see it consume approx 4GB RAM as expected but then I notice Linux (via top) slowly eating away at the remaining RAM. An hour later and I'm almost out of wired RAM.
top - 17:35:03 up 7:41, 3 users, load average: 0.40, 0.50, 0.54

5628 root 20 0 6251652 4.201g 4.060g S 48.3 27.3 28:48.89 vmware-vmx
The only fix is of course a reboot as the leak seems to be happening in the kernel or some driver. I don't see a user-land process eating this.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Hello,
Is there any official or unofficial documentation on NSX maximums ? Max dFW rules, max dLR dLW ... like the one for vSphere ?
Thanks

Workstation 11 - Guest Win7 on Host Win8.1 - SLOW Guest PREBOOT
Hello,
I'm new to vmware and used to work with VirtualBox.Guest on VirtualBox boot right away when started.
My host is running on a AMD FX-8350 8 core 4.2Ghz with 32Gb ram and VDI are stored on a Samsung 850 PRO SSD.
Each time I boot a Win7 guest, I get a black screen for couples of minutes THEN the guest boots at a normal pace.
Any idea what vmware is doing to "prepare" the boot?
(I've read that renaming vmware "*debug*.exe" makes it faster. Which I did and didn't notice that much improvements)
But if the guess is paused and restarted - it is quick to restart as expected.
Thanks

SRM 5.8 using NetApp ONTAP Simulator 8.2 permissions issue
Hi Guys,
I have setup snap mirroring, and I have added the correct SRAs and it is showing as replicating...BUT when I try to move a VM to the replicating datastore...or even create a folder on it at the source site. It fails with Call "FileManager.MakeDirectory" for object "FileManager" on vCenter Server "vCenter2008.gotham.com" failed.
This screams to me a rights issue. I have configured the rights using the web-client (OnCommand System Manager), if I give the hosts Root access to the NFS export then SRM/SRAs wont see the NFS datastore and use it for array replication, its in a couple of articles. The hosts need read/write access only for it to work.
But even with the hosts having read/write, I cant create anything on this NFS datastore at my source site.
The NFS datastore at the Test/DR site is mounted as read-only on those hosts as recommended in other posts and is set to restricted on the NetApp side
As it stands...it appears ABR is working (according to the webclient, it is showing outgoing array replication), but it isn't actually replicating anything but empty space?
snapmirror status
Snapmirror is on.
Source Destination State Lag Status
NetApp1:vol1 NetApp2:vol2 Snapmirrored 00:00:00 In-sync
I am still new to Netapp/snapmirror/NFS in general. This may sound really stupid, but the replicated datastore, has the VMs on it that you want replicated and they are replicated byte for byte as everything on the array is sent across to the DR site?
Thanks for your help guys!

How to convert existing VM with 1 disk but 2 partitions to a VM with 2 disks (one for each partition)
We have a VM (Windows Server 2008) that was originally created with one virtual hard disk. From that disk, two partitions were created on the VM (c-drive and d-drive). This is not our normal practice (usually we create one disk in VMWare for each partition. In this case, unfortunately, the c-drive has reached near capacity, and it cannot be extended as there is not any contiguous space.
What is the best practice for converting this VM such that each partition has its own vmware disk?
Thanks,
Jeff
Restrictions management server not reachable
Hi,
I have the following problem with VMware Workstation 10:
I have several VMs running with enabled restrictions and the default
vmware restriction server (https://rvm.vmware.com)
Until recently, that worked fine, but yesterday I tried to import a new
restricted VM, and I get the error message when trying to start the VM:
"The restrictions management server must be accessible when this
restricted virtual machine is used for the first time on this host.
Check your network connectivity and try again." (see screenshot)
I have internet connectivity and no firewall (interal, or companywide)
enabled, and I am able to ping rvm.vmware.com, so I guess the connection
is fine.
Running a tcpdump while starting the VM reveals the error "Handshake
failure". (attached wireshark dump)
Right now I am unable to use ANY new restricted VM!
Is there any problem known with the restriction server? Any ideas how to
fix this severe problem.
Thanks for you help!
Best regards,
Dennis
