Autoconnect USB device no longer works in VMWare Workstation 15

The autoconnection of USB devices is no longer working in VMware 15 for me.

In the config file there is a record:

usb.autoConnect.device0 = "path:1/3/0/1 autoclean:1" - Is this setting deprecated in version 15
but in the log file I see
USB: Skiping autoconnect in WS, using askconnect

In the log file from version 14 there was a record that the connection was successful.

Cofig file is the same, no changes.

Can anyone help or try if the autoconnect works  in your case.

Does vSphere need API manually enabled or is a license required?

Hi, I'm quite new to vSphere - I have set up the free version of vSphere 6.7 on a machine and set up a few VM's manually.  So far so good...

I'm now attempting to use some software that should work with vSphere's API, but it appears to be failing to successfully call the API.  This is somewhat of a guess I'm also new to this software (GitHub - chef/kitchen-vcenter: A test-kitchen driver for vCenter REST API ) and the debugging is not very good, but the debug log indicates that it is failing when it attempts to create a VM with an API call.

I wondered if there's a simple way I can manually check that the API is working as it should be, or perhaps there's just a configuration option I need to enable somewhere.  Or maybe this is only available in a paid version?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

VMware® NSX-T Reference Design

This is the first revision of the VMware® NSX-T Reference design and is aimed to deliver an architectural baseline.

Authors: VMware NSX Technical Product Management Team

Readers can expect technical details around deep packet walks for layer 2 & 3, security capabilities, and overall architecture design (ex. the design considerations for ESXi and KVM based environments).  The design chapter uses previously well adopted and understood design practices of NSX for vSphere architecture; however, NSX-T does not assume familiarity with NSX for vSphere and we treat knowledge of the platform independently.  Additionally, the design document covers the deployment guidelines of the bare metal edge node, as well as cluster design covering multi-VC ESXi deployment (including KVM only design).  As more customers deploy the NSX-T architecture and as new features get introduced to the platform, we will continue to update the document (for example, NSX-T 2.1 release supports load balancer functionality) to provide design guidance.

In addition to the design guide, we are also sharing a container whitepaper covering the container related ecosystem from a technical standpoint, where we discuss a majority of the various offerings in this space – our goal is to provide guidance and education for any networking and security reader to get familiar with overall landscape, and then through that lens, understand the need for the development of NSX Container Plugin (NCP)

Feedback and Comments to the Authors and the NSX Solution Team are highly appreciated.  Happy Reading.

Flooded Logs from ESXi Hosts

We've integrated ESXi hosts to send syslog to Log Insight but it's generating 25 milliions logs per hour.

Without reducing the verbose on the hosts, any why i can limit what Log Insight takes in?  Such as with Windows Agents, I can drop events.

vmware-vmx high cpu usage causing Mac to heat up constantly

  • Processor Name: Intel Core i7
  • Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
  • Number of Processors: 1
  • Total Number of Cores: 4
  • L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
  • L3 Cache: 6 MB

VMWare Fusion Professional Version 8.5.10 (7527438)

When I power-on the VM, MacBook fan starts to run very noisy and get machine hot. I've seen in Activity Monitor that a process "vmware-vmx" is hanging a lot of CPU (about 100-150% at any time).

I got a Windows 10 Enterprise VM with dedicated/allocated 2 cores and 8GB RAM. I power-on the virtual machine and min later the fans are running very fast and Activity Monitor shows that vmware-vmx is using +100% CPU.

I've tried to play with the resources, turn off accelerate 3D graphics but no result. What can I do to troubleshoot and how do I get to the root cause. This issue was not even noticeable a year ago but not sure what changed to all the sudden heat up and run high CPU.

I cannot unmount nor delete a datastore

Hi,

We have a Dell PowerEdge R440 server running VMware ESXi 6.7 in our company.

It's configuration has the OS running in a SD card and a 3 drives in RAID 5 as the storage for the VMs.

As we added more VMs (we had 5) the performance got really bad, so we decided to do a disk upgrade.

After measuring the performance of that server with Live Optics, we decided to add another drive and have RAID 10 instead of RAID 5.

The plan was:

1) Backup all the VMs on the Dell server - Done

2) Erase the VMs on that server - Done

3) Unmount and delete the LocalStorage-1 datastore on VMware- Not working

4) Break the RAID 5 running with 3 disks on the Dell server

5) Turn off the server and add the new drive to the Dell server

6) Build the RAID 10 running with 4 disks on the Dell server

7) Create the LocalStorage-1 datastore on VMware

8) Restore all the VMs to the Dell server

However, when I tried to unmount or delete the LocalStorage-1, it simply wouldn't work.

Inspecting the configuration with more details, I found 3 devices: the SD card, the RAID 5, and a 18GB one that I don't know what is.

If I try to delete the current partition on the RAID 5 device it also doesn't work.

If I browse the local storage, I can see 2 folders, but can delete just the .locker one (which returns if I reboot the server)

So, it seems that there is something writing to that local storage and for that reason I can't delete it.

However, I already looked at all the configurations and couldn't find what that was.

The only one I found is an advanced setting that still points to that datastore, but it doesn't accept me to change its setting and point to a different location

Does anybody have any suggestion?

Thanks,

Carlos

vDS health check showing "Non-IP Hash Mismatch"

$

I have two 10 gig connections into a Virtual Distributed switch. We are using this for iSCSI, vMotion, and VM traffic. The Juniper switch ports that provide connectivity are configured as trunks ports, no LACP or aggregation.

  • We use iSCSI port binding and both VMkernel ports are configured as "Route based on originating virtual port"
  • We use multi-nic vMotion and both VMkernel ports are configured as "Route based on originating virtual port"
  • Our VM portgroup is configured with "Route based on physical NIC load"

Everything has been working fine for the past 6 months when we put these new HPE servers in. We decided to enable Virtual Distributed Switch Health check and it came up with several problems including Non-IP Hash Mismatch under teaming and failover. This is either a mis-configuration on our part or the vDS health check is buggy and not reliable. We are running ESXi 6.7 update 1. What are you seeing in your vDS health check?

How to remove "Controller Deployment Failure" warning message?

$

Hi all,

I had some issues deploying NSX controllers in my lab and now I get a message in vCenter's "Networking and Security" section:

"2 Controller Deployment Failures"

How do I remove this message? There is no option to remove it in the GUI, and I cannot find anything related in the API guide (checking support notifications does not return anything).

Also, what could be a problem with deploying the controller on this host? The controller got deployed just fine on the second cluster node... The problematic cluster node also shows up in vCenter with a blue host icon when the other hosts have grey icons. I don't see anything different in this host's firewall setup.

Thanks in advance!

Request a resource action with a request template on behalf of a user

I'm attempting to request a vRA resource action from vRO that takes an Array/String as input. The vRO request is being executed as a service account, so the vRA request needs to be done on behalf of a user. When i try to use the "Request resource action on behalf of a user" workflow i get the error "Cannot compute a Literal for org.mozilla.javascript.NativeArray". When I try to use the "Request a resource action with a request template" workflow the request works but it is done as the service account.

I'd like to know how to:

1. Create a vCACCAFEArrayLiteral object

2. Submit the "Request a resource action with a request template" vRO workflow on behalf of a user

How to get cursor to work with new vm before Tools installed?

Using Chrome, have web connection to vm and have signed in to the vm.

But I can't get the cursor to work in the vm screen.

The cursor works within the black outer part of the screen with the

Send Ctrl+ALT+Delete button. But does not work with dark blue inner screen

of the vm.  Just using the key board it is impossible to use all of the vm functions for

moving around and deleting opens sub screens.

Have tired all kinds of key combinations but haven't gotten cursor to work.

Or is the cursor not supposed to work on the inner screen of the vm before

installing VMware Tools?

Hardware compatibility/recommendations for vSAN setup

$

Need to decide which HBA and disks to choose for a few new vSAN setups (both All flash and hybrid)

Upon checking PERC H730P Mini, I saw that there was a note on the HCL recommending the HBA330 instead, any thoughts/considerations?

As for the disks, what information is needed to confirm compatibility? (suspect model name is enough and then matching with vSAN guide PDF, see below:)

https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/pdf/vi_vsan_guide.pdf

For all flash is an NVMe at the cache layer and SSD's at the capacity layer the recommended option?

Any other hardware in terms of vSAN compatibility that needs to be checked?

Thanks

Recovering ESXi Datastorage and VM Hosts after hardware failure

$

Hello,

We had a Dell R610 which had a VMWare ESXi 6.5u1 host running on a Raid 5 configuration.  Unfortunately the R610 this was on died and we had to replace with a new system.   I am in the process of trying to recover some of the data so I can migrate it over to the new system but am having some issues.  I pulled the old drives and placed into another R610 with the hope that I could just power up and begin pulling data from the VM Hosts.   I'm able to load up VMWare ESXi and log into the vSphere web client but the VM is not loading properly and the datastore is also not mounting although I do see the device and partitions.   Is there a way to mount that existing datastore so I can load the VM from it? I only see a way to create a fully new datastore (deleting the old one) or extending it.

Script to automatically remove VM's older than 14 days.

$

Hi guys,

A while back Mr. LucD helped me with a script that automatically deletes any VM that has been powered off longer than 14 days. The script does work as intended but I wanted to see if someone could help me by modifying it so that instead of me having to update the script manually to exclude a VM from being deleted, we could simply make it so that if a virtual machine or multiple virtual machines are inside a folder, these would not get deleted. In other words, if we manually move a VM to a folder, the script will NOT remove any of the virtual machines inside it.

Below is the script I am using.

##Load all VMware related snap-ins

#Add-PSSnapin VMware.VimAutomation.Core

Get-Module -ListAvailable VM* | Import-Module

##vCenter connection information

$vcenter = 'vcenter instances'

$vcenteruser = 'vadmin'

$vcenterpw = ''

##Connects to all vCenter instances

Connect-VIServer $vcenter -User $vcenteruser -Password $vcenterpw

#Here's where you can exclude any virtual machines from being removed by the script. You will need to un-comment this line.

#You will also need to comment the $excludedVM = @{} line in order to honor this line.

#$excludedVM = 'Some VM' -----> This is where a folder would be a lot safer to use.

#Here's where you can ignore the exclusions. If you un-comment this line, all virtual machines that meet the 7 day criteria will be removed.

#If you comment this line, then you will need to un-comment the #$excludedVM = 'VM Name Line' in order to honor this line.

$excludedVM = @{}

#Here you're defining the any VM variable

$vms = @{}

#This piece will get all powered off VMs and exclude the ones from the list that were defined in the $excludedVM variable

Get-VM | where {$_.PowerState -eq "PoweredOff" -and $excludedVM -notcontains $_.Name} | % {$vms.Add($_.Name, $_)}

#Get-VM | where {$_.PowerState -eq "PoweredOff"} | % {$vms.Add($_.Name, $_)}

#Exclude any virtual machine that was powered off before the last 7 days

Get-VIEvent -Start (Get-Date).AddDays(-7) -Entity $vms.Values -MaxSamples ([int]::MaxValue) | where {$_ -is [VMware.Vim.VmPoweredOffEvent]} | Sort-Object -Property CreatedTime -Unique | % {$vms.Remove($_.VM.Name)}

#Remove the remaining VMs

#Remove-VM -VM $vms.Values -DeletePermanently -Confirm:$false -WhatIf

Remove-VM -VM $vms.Values -DeletePermanently -Confirm:$false

UCS C220 and C210 firmware/driver question

I'm new to the Cisco server hardware, my experience is mostly with HP, and I wanted to update the firmware on two servers we have here- a Cisco UCS C220 and C210.  How does everyone else usually upgrade the firmware/drivers on these?  Do they just boot into the HUU ISO, install everything and then run the Cisco ESXi installer?  Can you run the huu before updating the CIMC firmware?

Thanks!

Hi, I have noticed some major perfomance issues in my VDI environment. I also just noticed my composer\vcenter server is in a different cluster than my connection servers. Is this the problem? Do they have to be in the same cluster? Is that best practice?

Unexpected Chrome problems in Horizon

Hi there!

A few weeks ago I got into a strange problem with one of our vdi images. Google Chrome completely stopped rendering sites. Every site is white even the settings won't work anymore. There are no errors displayed on the site. The only thing I see ist the error favicon in the tab.

Here's what I tried:

  • Starting Chrome with --disable-gpu
  • Reinstalling Chrome
  • Updating Chrome to the newest version.
  • Deleting my AppVolumes Disk

I've already asked the chrome community but they couldn't help me either. So I'm trying it here.

Here's some more infromations you might need:

- We are using VMware Horizon 7.3.2

- Running on vCenter 6.0.0

- The OS used is Windows 10 Enterprise 1607

- Chrome Version  73.0.3683.86 (Enterprise edition)

- We are using VMware App Volumes 2.14.0.184 (Chrome is not installed on a App Volumes Disk. It's installed on the Windows Image)

If you need any more informations, feel free to ask.

Thank you in advance!
