VMware Lab Network Settings

I am currently using VMware Workstation 10 at work to set up labs so that I can study for various MS exams however I am not that familiar with VMware. My question is that when setting up a virtual lab what is the most appropriate network setting to use? The other day I set up 2 domain controllers with DNS and DHCP with a 172.16.0.0 IP range and had my VMs set to use the NAT setting. This unfortunately led to a handful out of a few thousand clients on my physical network to then pick up my virtual servers DHCP broadcast and renew with an IP lease from the 172.16.0.0 range.

 

I might be wanting the best of both worlds here but I want to basically isolate any kind of settings getting out on to my physical network but would if possible like them to have access to the internet. I suppose that is quite contradictive because even using the internet requires a request to go out on the physical network before it can receive anything back.

 

Any suggestions?

Web client has empty inventory

I have two hosts in VCenter, one is 5.0 build 441354 the other is 5.1 build 1483097 the VCenter is version 5.1 build 1473063 when I launch the web client, and I've tried on several PC's, the inventory is always empty, why is this?

 

Also, is it possible with the versions I have, get the web client working on a Mac?

 

I don't want to upgrade to 5.5 so I hope that is not the solution.

vCAC 6 - missing VM actions

Hi,

 

I've created a clone Blueprint and in "Actions" select all options (attach screenshot). But when I create an item based on that blueprint, I only see "Connect using RDP" and "Connect using VMRC" (attach second screenshot).

 

Why I can't see the other actions? (Destroy, Expire, Power on, Power off, Reboot, etc).

And why I can't even change the "Description of the VM"?

FAILED: A general system error occurred: SQL_CANTOPEN: unable to open database file

I have tried to convert a physical disk with the program and every time I try it fails with the same error, FAILED: A general system error occurred: SQL_CANTOPEN:
unable to open database file I have tried over 10 times and always get the same error. It usually failed after a few % but has failed at other times, once at 97%. I have tried with networking turned off, rebooted the machine, ran chkdsk on both the machine and external drive. the drive is under 700gb and the disk I'm trying to install the image on is 932gb free.

 

any suggestions? attaching error logs.

This is a message in my eventlogs. Host: Windows 8.1 U1 64 bit. What should I do? Because the 10.0.2 VMware Workstation was released after the Windows 8.1U1 update and during the installation of 10.0.2 it uninstalled 10.0.1.

Cannot add VMFS datastore to ESXi host

Hello all,

 

I have an issue with 1 FC LUN that can be seen as a device through multiple paths on all 10 hosts in a cluster but it only appear as a VMFS datastore on 6 of the hosts. Other LUNs from the same array appear fine on all hosts. All 10 hosts see the LUN with the same LUN ID and all hosts are identical with respect to ESXi version (5.0 Update 2), HBA models and firmware.

 

On the 4 hosts that can see the device but not the VMFS datastore it appears that it sees the LUN as a snapshot: "esxcli storage vmfs snapshot list" results in:

   Volume Name: LUN101_SAS2
   VMFS UUID: 4f5e5cbb-a87cd2c6-86e9-d8d385f98034
   Can mount: true
   Reason for un-mountability:
   Can resignature: false
   Reason for non-resignaturability: the volume is being actively used
   Unresolved Extent Count: 1

 

The above VMFS UUID matches the VMFS UUID seen on the 6 hosts that can see the VMFS datastore.

 

When I try to use "Add Storage", the device appears with a VMFS Label of: LUN101_SAS2(head). I'm not sure why (head) has been appended to the VMFS label. On the following screen the "Keep existing signature" and "Assign a new signature" options are greyed out. The only option is "Format the disk". I need to keep the existing signature as there are running VMs that have their .vmx and .vmdk files on this LUN.

 

Would the fact that I have running VMs on this LUN be preventing me from choosing the "Keep existing signature" option?

Will I need to Storage vMotion these VMs to another LUN before I can add the VMFS datastore to the 4 hosts?

How do I create a Raw Disk Mapping (RDM) on SATA HDDs on ESXI 5.5?

Im using vSphere Client 5.5 I have a VM 8 running WS2012R2 and I tried to raw map a disk using this: http://blog.davidwarburton.net/2010/10/25/rdm-mapping-of-local-sata-storage-for-esxi/ and while it worked, for some reason, it (unknown moment or time since that VM is idle all the time) suddenlly erases everything on the disk and tells me to reinitialize it. I did it once and that happened. Might have been a odd bug so I did it again (recopying in the process over 1.5TB of information which took a while) and it worked again. Today, I open the console for the VM and again it tells to the reinitialize the disk. So I ask, what is the proper way to do this? Thank you?

Cryptic VMware Horizon View Client error

Does anyone know what this error from the latest version VMware Horizon View Client is trying to say?

My initial guess was that it is trying to say the user is not entitled to the desktop pool. However, I know for sure the user is entitled. It seems to be happening only to this user so far. I've Googled the error but came up nothing.

 

Any comments or tips would help narrowing down our troubleshooting.

VMware HA restart time line

Hi all,

 

Several of our customers use NetApp MetroCluster with an extended VMware Cluster in version 5.1 and 5.5.

If a DR event happens HA time line by default allow 5 retries to restart VMs on DR site with those time lines:

 

T0 – Initial Restart

T2m – Restart retry 1

T6m – Restart retry 2

T14m – Restart retry 3

T30m – Restart retry 4


But this delay is often quite short to act (during a week end for exemple).


If we modify das.maxvmrestartcount to 10 or 20 we can increase restart tries but we can find any doc or KB that describe how are scheduled those next schedule.

Does someone know how are scheduled those 5+ schedule :

- each retry will still increase in time ?

-  what else ?

Faire évoluer licence VMware vSphere Essentials Plus Kit

Je pense à prendre une licence VMware vSphere Essentials Plus Kit pour faire tourner 3 serveurs de 1 CPU chacun. Est-ce que cette licence est évolutive, si demain je dois rajouter un serveur supplémentaire? Puis-je le faire en achetant juste une licence pour ce serveur supplémentaire? De quel licence (coût) s'agit-il ?

RHEL7 Fails to see network device on VMware Fusion 6.0.3 // Tags: Red Hat 7, RHEL7, RHEL7 Fusion, RHEL7 Network, RHEL7 Networking, VMware Fusion

No matter which method I choose, I cannot get VMware Fusion 6.0.3 on my MBPro to emit the network device to RHEL7.

 

Are there any work-arounds?

SRM 5.5 - SRA command 'discoverDevices' failed. Failed getting attached devices in site. - Recoverpoint SRA's

SRM has been installed at both sides.  SRAs installed on both SRM servers.  Sites created.  I have setup a portion of the inventory mappings, but have not set up the placeholder LUNs.

 

Array managers are installed, but when i enable the pair, one array manager has the exclamation point with the above error.

 

vCenter Server 5.5

ESXi hosts 5.1

SRM 5.5

 

The error says to look at the logs, but I can't find any logs that are helpful.

 

Any help would be appreciated.

Personna Management - Unified Desktop - Multi site design

Hi to everyone,

looking for some advices on how to achieve the right implementation of personna management in a multi site environment to have a unified user environment between physical computers and View desktops.

If you were to install PM on laptop - desktop with redirection of folders to a share with the same in view that way users have a unified environment, how would you set this up taking into account that you have branch offices and there is no way to consider people downloading / syncing their profile accross the wan ?

I was thinking of implementing the share on a DFS but would there be any issues / limitation doing so ?

As anyone already been through such scenario ?

Host Mem

Hi All,

 

This is my first post so bear with me!

Environment: ESXi 5.1 U1

 

I know there is some information buzzing around net but none of it really answers my questions. I have Win8, Win7, Server 2012, running as VMs in ESXi these have been running for over 100 days what seems strange is that the reported Host Mem is very high on all the vms. But the Guest Mem reported is very low.

 

Example: Server 2012 RAM allocation is set to 8192 MB with unlimited Limit set.

 

Reported Active is 3 gb

Consumed is 8 gb

Granted is 8.3 gb

Windows reports 3 gb used

 

My questions is why does the Host retain so much memory and not release it?           Using 3 gb holding 8 gb

This is causing the Host memory usage alarm to be triggered. With out setting a limit to the memory for all the vms I would of thought memory managment would or should be releasing memory.

 

Can I please get a heads up what I'm missing here.

problems with build a chrome thinapp

I have several problems when I used thinapp 5.0 to build a chrome thinapp on win7 x64.

  1. chrome’s icon doesn’t show in taskbar. Same as  https://communities.vmware.com/thread/471046?start=0&tstart=0
  2. The folder of current woking directory has been appeared in Sandbox when chrome thinapp was running.
  3. Can’t install any extension.

Show "Can not unpack extension.  To safely unpack an extension, there must be a path to your profile directory that starts with a drive letter and does not contain a junction, mount point, or symlink. No such path exists for your profile." error message. use -no-sandbox?

4. The folder of current woking directory has nest many times. So the path in sandbox is too long.

I need a little advise and feedback and hope someone in the VMware community can help.
And, thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and give your help and feedback.

 

I have some questions about Workstation 10, Fusion Pro and Player Plus and hope I can get some

feedback and the answers I need before I buy.

 

I have a great workstation - HP z800 fully loaded and just purchased a new 1TB SSD and 4TB SSHD
plus external drives for backup etc. to expand the performance of my work, personal and everyday use.
I now have a total of 22TB plus of combined drive space.

 

Based on my work projects which requires the use of graphic design, software testing, and media video
editing - I need more than one OS. I like my dual booting and don't want to change that platform.. so while
I was looking for more options on using multiple OS's on my WS PC, I came across OVM VirtualBox and
I liked what I saw.. and then I discovered VMware and I really liked what I saw. Based on all the research

and data I gathered on VMware - I am sold! It seems like great stuff! If it can work for me as I need it, that

would be great! I would also recommend it to my partner for our business.

 

However, my main concern is I don't want to lose anyPERFORMANCE on my Workstation PC, because obviously
any kind of VM environment may take away some, or a lot of performance vs having an OS directly installed on
any drive. Which brings me to ask, should I just get all 3 software products - Workstation 10, Fusion Pro and
Player Plus? Because if this helps - great!  Note: I don't mind losing some performance on the VM OS's, but I 

don't want to lose any performance on my Main OS SSD. This is what I would like to know.


*Also, I don't want to give up having my Dual / Multi-boot OS's on my current system. I would like to install and use
Workstation 10 and the other VMware software on my 3rd, 2TB drive and on my 4th, 4TB drive. This is where
I get a bit confused on how this will work, unless the VMware community can advise and let me know the

best options available.. so I can use my Dual Multi-boot Win7/Win 8/Linux along with Workstation 10 and 
the other VMware software on my 3rd and 4th drives. It would be most appreciated and helpful to know

the best way to go about this.

 

Please keep in mind, my work requires high performance on my PC, and because I also like my gaming world,
I don't want to sacrifice performance on my main SSD. I rather just keep my dual Multi-boot as is on my OS's, 

if the dual-Multi-boot with Workstation 10 and the other VMware software doesn't work for me. I hope it does.

 

Also, below are my current Workstation PC Specs - I believe my current system specs can work well with WS 10
and the other VMware software, but I need to do this with dual Multi-boot and have Workstation 10 on my 3rd drive - 

again, this is where it gets confusing. Hopefully I will find the answers I need from this VMware community post,  
and by giving my current specs to get the best answers and options available for my kind of computer system.

So has anyone attempted to load any version of ESXi onto the HP Z620?

 

This is a new Workstation that is supposed to be an upgrade from the previous Z600 but it has several enhancements so just wondering if it is supported, since it would make for a cheaper solution than having to buy a Proliant Server...
