Fusion 6.0.2 and OSx Mavericks 10.9.1 - Sleep Wake failure unless I shutdown or suspend my Win7Pro VM before closing lid

$

0

I recently bought a new macbook pro, tht is up to date with Mavericks 10.9.1

I bout Fusion 6 and migrated my VM from my old macbook that was running Fusion 4.

All seemed to go well.

The VM performs awesomely.

The problem is when I put the Macbook to sleep... I get the 'infamous' Sleep Wake Failure when I wake it up, and the macbook is restarted.

I say infamous, as there are many users of mavericks experiencing this for all sorts of causes.

In my case I singled the cause down to my VMware Fusion 6, running a Win7 Pro machine. If this is still running when I sleep the Macbook then I get the Sleep Wake Failure every time I wake the MacBook. If I shutdown or suspend the VM first, then this does not happen.

Please can this be looked at...

I used to work in this way with my old macbook (OSx Lion, Fusion 4) and never had issues sleeping the macbook and resuming.

Thanks

Simon

Use WANem to create a great adjustable WAN simulator in 10 minutes!

I thought I’d write something up as I was looking for a WAN simulator tool to pass some VM traffic between to determine impacts on a few scenarios. As I don't have a web site and I'm using VMWare Fusion this seems like a logical place to put it.

Basically this will give you a few subnets with a fake WAN in between which will allow you to; increase latency, added jitter, reduce bandwidth, etc.

I’ve made the following assumptions, which you can change as you see fit -

1. I’m a Mac user so this is written with VMWare Fusion in mind, though Workstation would be pretty much the same

2. LAN 1 has the subnet 10.1.1.0/24 (you can change these or even use IPv6)

3. LAN 2 has the subnet 10.1.2.0/24

4. LAN 3 has the subnet 10.1.3.0/24

5. LAN 4 has the subnet 10.1.4.0/24

6. This VM interfaces will be configured as private (Private to my Mac)

7. VMWare’s DHCP is disabled on private (KB102651)

Okay, lets get started…

We’ll be using WANem - http://wanem.sourceforge.net/

Note that are instructions on the net about setting up WANem but most require you to add default routes on the guest OS’s, I think it’s better to use gateways.

I’m using version 3 beta 2. You’ll need the ISO for this, so download that and unzip it. Create a VM with the following specs -

A. OS - Other Linux 3.x kernel

B. 1 vCPU

C. 256MB of RAM (more might be needed if you're pushing heavy data loads through)

D. 4x NIC’s (less or more is fine, whatever you think you’ll need)

E. IDE HDD with 3GB of space (more might be needed if you intend to push heavy data loads through)

F. Disable as much as possible - audio, BT and USB, Printer, etc.

Attach the ISO to the CD Drive and boot. You’ll notice as it’s booting it won’t find any DHCP and will throw a few errors - thats expected.

Once it’s started you should be presented with a web browser and the Network Connections configuration page. Close that page and the browser.

Click on the icon to the bottom left, select Preferences, WANem HD Install. Click Accept through the next few windows.

Select Disk use whole hard disk. Select the disk which should be around 3GB and OK. Select Yes and let it install. You should get a good message. You’ll be asked to select a disk again, select the top item which should be /dev/sda2 with around 2GB of space and click OK. It should now be installing.

Next up you’ll be prompted to configure the boot loader grub. Click OK. Go with the default top option mbr and click OK. Click Yes to install. Click OK to the success message and finally click Yes to restart.

Do as it says - disconnect the CD ISO image and hit return.

Once WANem restarts you’ll be at the WANem prompt. At this point WANem is installed, any configuration changes you make will now stick where as before you were booting a LiveCD and each reboot would see the settings lost.

Almost there.

Type startx and press enter to get the GUI back.

Once the GUI starts you should be back to the web browser and Network Connections.

Click eth0 then click edit. Select the IPv4 (or v6) settings, change Method to Manual. Click add and enter 10.1.1.1 and press return. Being a class A address it will assume a /8 subnet mask, double click 8 and make it 24 then press return. Now click save.

Do the same for eth1, eth2 and eth3 using 10.1.2.1/24, 10.1.3.1/24 and 10.1.4.1/24. Close the Network Connections page.

Now would be a good time to shutdown and create a snapshot or copy the VM to a safe backup location. To shutdown select the icon in the bottom right.

Once it’s rebooted (or continuing on from above without a reboot) select Basic Mode in the web browser. As you can see here you can set the WAN speed and network delay for each interface or as you can think of them now virtual WAN links. You can also go more in depth in the Advanced Mode tab.

I’ll leave the rest up to you. From this point when you boot the VM it will start in a CLI, you can startx but you can also make changes using “help” but it’s easier in the GUI. For those advanced users keep an eye on top and swap usage and increase RAM as needed. For those who are worried about pushing big data loads through WANem simply give it a bit more RAM, at 128MB it does swap a little but at 256MB I haven't see it swap so 512MB would be very safe.

So now when you build a VM in one of those subnets you use the 10.1.x.1 IP as the gateway and adjust it’s WAN performance however you like.

Hope that helps anyone who’s after a lean WAN emulator that works really well. Thanks to TATA Consulting Services who make WANem, all credit to them for the great distro.

If I’ve made any mistakes let me know and I’ll update this post.

Cheers.

1- No vShield driver => OK

2- vShield driver installed => OK

3- After reboot => KO

4- After unload vsepflt => OK

5- After load vsepflt => OK

How do I hide SOME (not all) systray icons in Unity?

Is there a way to hide certain systray icons in Unity? While in Windows, I can choose which systray icons to hide and which ones to show, however, in Unity I only have the option to show all, or show none. The all or nothing approach isn't ideal. Is there a way to pick which icons are shown?

How can I setup PCI passthrough for my HighPoint 1144A USB 3.0 card under ESXi 5.1?

$

I have an Apple Mac Pro (MacPro5,1) running VMware ESXi 5.1.0 (799733) with a HighPoint RocketU 1144A USB 3.0 PCI-express card installed. Given that VMware ESXi 5.1 doesn't support USB 3.0 for host-attached devices, I am trying to attach the USB 3.0 PCIe card to a virtual machine using DirectPath I/O PCI passthrough.

It took me a number of different configurations, but I finally managed to configure the HighPoint RocketU 1144A USB 3.0 PCI Express card for DitectPath passthrough:

DirectPath Configuration Screenshot

DirectPath Status Screenshot

The first few times I tried, after rebooting I still received the "The host needs to be rebooted to apply configuration changes" warning, even after rebooting the host. Finally I found that by moving the USB 3.0 card to the 3rd PCIe slot, I was able to get the passthrough configuration to stick.

I also note that the device shows up as a "ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1042 SuperSpeed USB Host Controller" when it actually should have 4xASM1042 chips on it. I also had to pass-through the PLX Technology, Inc PEX 8609 8-lane, 8-Port PCI Express Gen 2 Switch to make the configuration changes stick.

Now, however, I am stuck trying to attach the ASMedia Technology ASM1042 device to a FreeBSD (FreeNAS) virtual machine. When I add the device as a PCI passthrough device to the virtual machine, I am unable to power on the virtual machine:

VM Power On Error Screencapture

VMware ESX unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0) PCIPassthruChangeIntrSettings: 09:00.1 failed to register interrupt (error code 195887105)

I tried passing through only the ASMedia ASM1042, only the PLX PEX 8609, and both the two devices. None of these three configurations worked.

Googling for that error code led me to this forum post in German which by using Google Translate I was able to extract the following information:

You have to disable MSI and forcing the card to get a INTx interrupt access, we go. Can you read here on page 5. http: / / www.vmware.com/pdf/vsp_4_vmdirectpath_host.pdf you following parameters have to manually add to your VM config: pciPassthru0.msiEnabled = "FALSE" I had to run the whole thing also virtualisert to ESXi and then I walked the closed system of ESXi but with the time on your nerves because you problems but not actually really engage. can I have now migrated to KVM (Proxmox VE) where the rich and Cine S2 V5.5 also successful at the next VM (with MSI). The whole runs super stable.

Following those instructions I added

pciPassthru0.msiEnabled = "FALSE" pciPassthru1.msiEnabled = "FALSE"

to my .vmx file, and this did enable me to boot the FreeBSD 8.3 (FreeNAS 8.3.1) VM... however the virtual machine hung at boot here:

FreeBSD Hang Screencapture

I expect that I need to make some other change. The VMware PDF document they linked to describes "linked devices", and I expect there's some sort of linking going on whereby the 4xASM1042 chips (because the 4 ports on the USB 3.0 card each have their own channel) need to be linked through the switch... or something... but I am unsure of technically what is going on or how to proceed.

How can I resolve these problems and get passthru working for the HighPoint 1144A USB 3.0 card under EXSi 5.1?

Error Trying to Stop SCHEDULE Service Warning in Heartbeat

$

Hi There

My example is from running VMware vCenter Heartbeat 6.4 on a dedicated SQL server, this SQL server is Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL 2005.

I get an hourly message stating access to the 'SCHEDULE' service is denied.  When trying to perform a switch over, this message occurs continuously for about 5 minutes then the failover will actually occur.  The error message is:

error.png

For those of you experiencing this error, this is due to the fact that the "SqlServer" services that VMware vCenter Heartbeat chooses to monitor by default includes the Windows Task Scheduler service (screenshot to follow).  This is a system controlled service and cannot be stopped or started by a service account or user.  It expects that on the Primary Server for the service to be started and on the Secondary server for the service to be stopped (even though its running), obviously it cannot stop/start this service so it generates these errors by trying to stop the service every hour, and during a switch over it generates the error a lot as it tries to stop the service on the Primary server.

services.png

And for some reason i can only edit the order under SqlServer, i cannot remove it or change the target states (to say who cares if its running on the secondary), but I'm waiting on VMware to get back to me on this.

Just thought that the community should know

Cheers All

Trying a simple copy-vmguestfile command and it is failing with 500 internal server error. Anyone have a suggestion on what could be causing this error? I updated the vmtools on the windows vm but that also does not seem to help. The error and versions I am using are below.

some extents missing

$

Hi,

i'm trying to recover some data from a damaged datastore.

i had a datastore that was made out of 4 extents. the extents were iSCSI luns from dell storage.

i had some issues with the storage and Dell had to recover the luns.

when i tried to connect does luns again to my server, the ESX server did not recognized them as the datastore they were.

i can disk the disks in the server but can not access them ( when trying to add them in the add storage wizard it only lets me to delete them).

when i'm trying to mount them using esxcfg-volume -m i'm getting and error saying "some extents missing".

i'm not sure that datastore didn't had any other extents, can i see the datastore extents somewhere?

How to change verbosity of usb.log?

$

Hi,

I have a special cluster where the VMs have USB devices. Each VM has more than one device from the same manufacturer.

I need to identify dongles via the serial number but the vClient show me only the path USB (USB ID).

In ESXi 5.0 can obtain the desired information in usb.log as the example:

2014-02-12T19: 33:58 Z usbarb [2835]: USBArb: Device 6: name: WIBU-Systems \ CodeMeter-Stick vid: pid 064f: 03e9 path: 6/1/1 speed: full

family: storage version: 2 serialnum: 000002319999 id: 60006099f09e9 owner: VM001

The log of ESXi 5.1 or 5.5 does not display this information.

To view the log as shown above, you must add the parameter "--verbose" at service startup in /etc/init.d/usbarbitrator.

However, this change is not persistent.

How could I use the verbose mode on ESXi 5.5 usbarbitrator service persistently?

Thanks.

What happens if PVlans are on physical switches but not in VSphere hosts??

$

0

We have the possible scenario where we'll need PVlans for a few projects. However, only 3 of our 10 hosts have EnterprisePLUS license to support VDS for PVlans.

We can get away with having those special projects on those 3 hosts but, as I need to set up PVlans in the physical Cisco switches...

Will there be any issues between the regular vSwicthes on the other 7 hosts when talking to the Private Primary / Promiscuous VLAN on the physical Cisco switches??

Thanks

Unable to bond Etherchannel on ESXi 5.5

I couldn't seem to get an etherchannel working properly on a ESXi5.5 host, I'm not using vcenter and was attempting to aggregate the links to a Cisco 3750.

I referred to the kb article below, I configured IP hash on the ESXi host, set SRC-DST-IP aggregation algorithm on the switch, and disabled LACP, however when I disabled LACP per the guide, I lost connectivity altogether to the ESXi host, although all of the ports in the etherchannel showed '(P)' and actually correctly established a bundle.

If I re-configured the etherchannel to enable LACP, I could ping and connect to the host, however all of the ports in the etherchannel are showing '(I)' which means operating independently.

So I presume its the host configuration rather than the switch configuration which is incorrect but can anyone advise?

Update path for ESXi 4.1

We have ESXi build 260247.

In order to get our systems up to date, without moving to ESXi 5.0 just yet, can we simply install these patches in this order?

     update-from-esxi4.1-4.1_update02       10/27/2011

     ESXi410-201201001                              01/30/2012

ESX410-201112001                               also saw this one on one of the download pages, not sure if it is needed also.

If so, it would be installed prior to the 1/30/12 update I presume.

Or, do we need to install the intervening patches since our build was released, including update 1?
