VM suspend/sleep automatically - PIIX4: PMAccessPM got ACPI S1 request

$

Friends,

i am stuck in the situation where VM windows server 2008R2 automatically starts going to Sleep/Suspend mode & i can see on windows event logs as below(snippet 1), however on Power setting sleep option is set to "NEVER". there is no any other logs available on event logs that can tell cause of server sleep/suspend.

Checked ESXi logs & found "PIIX4: PMAccessPM got ACPI S1 request" that also indicates that system is set for some sleep setting. Refer ESXi logs what i can see(Snippet 2).

Do anyone have any idea of this issue?

Snippet 1

The system is entering sleep.

Sleep Reason: Application API

VMWare migration project

$

Hi all,

I have just been handed a VMWare migration project with the below details. I have limited VMWare experience and I still got this project but anyway..

Current setup:

  • There is vSphere A, in which it has 5 ESXi hosts running 5.5 and roughly 50 VMs.
  • This environment has multiple networks with vSwitches.
  • It also has 7 datastores attached to it.
  • Some VMs have volumes assigned to different datastores. For example, OS drive is assigned to datastore A and storage drive is assigned to datastore B.
  • The vCenter and ESXi hosts have 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses.

New setup:

  • Then there is vSphere B, to which 20 VMs from vSphere A needs to migrate. There are 3 ESXi hosts running 5.5.
  • This environment is vanilla, no network or VMs configured on it.
  • It has 2 datastores attached to it, 1 x RAID10 to run the VMs and 1 x RAID 6 for backup and storage repository.
  • The new environment will have 10.20.xxx.xxx addressing.

Both environments are physically sitting in the same building.

The requirements:

  • Migrated VMs must be accessible from 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses.
  • The migration needs to have as little downtime as possible since the VMs are production VMs.
  • There is only one license for VCenter. When the migration is completed, a new vCenter needs to be setup in in the new environment and license from the old vCenter will be used on this one. The old vCenter will be decommissioned.

I am planning to add the new ESXi hosts and datastores to the current vCenter. Then migrate the VMs the new ESXi hosts and datastores via the current vCenter. Change the addressing of those migrated and do a trial run.

So what is the best way to tackle this? Best practice? How would I migrate VMs that have different volumes assigned to different datastores?

Thanks.

Network goes down because of DLR VM vMotion

Hello,

I have a major issue and I have been having it for a long time (so the versions mentioned alone are the current versions, but it has been happening with older vSphere 6 and NSX 6.x versions too).

Often (so not always), when I put a Host from the "normal cluster" (with NSX) into Maint.mode and DRS vmotions all VM's away to other hosts and one of the NSX Logical Router VM's is on there and is also vMotioned to another host, the entire network goes down for 5 to 10 Minutes.

From my physical admin workstation, I lose ping to everything. And i mean everything: Core-Switch, Distribution switches, edge-switches, WiFi Accesspoints, all the ESXi servers and all the VM's. Really **everything** becomes unreachable.

After 5 to 10 minutes, everything comes back.

From the tsunami of Alert-emails that flood my mailbox (once my PC's email client re-established connection to the mailserver), it becomes clear that "everybody lost everybody" during the outage.

Environment:

NSX 6.3.2 running in Unicast mode.

vCenter Appliance 6.5 U1

1 x "Management Cluster" without NSX. This is where the NSX Manager and the three NSX Controller VM's live.

1 x "normal Cluster", all ESXi 6.5 U1 hosts run NSX and the two (HA-pair) Logical Router VM's run on this cluster.

No NSX Edge appliances other than the LR's.

Anti-affinity rules to ensure the LR VM's don't end up on the same host.

NSX shows no errors before the outage. Everything humming along fine.

Firewalls are non-vmware virtualized firewall-appliances (NSX distr.firewall not in use at this site).

I spent a lot of time going through logs on all devices etc. and what it is starting to look like, is that Spanning-tree (rstp) goes flippy, effectively killing layer-2, until everything settles down and gradually starts coming back (I keep a screen open with dozens and dozens of pings running to all kinds of systems and network-components).

The pattern that I have started noticing, is that, when it goes wrong (again, not always), it is always when the LR VM that is vmotioned was part of a mass-vmotion when a host, through DRS, is evacuated due to entering maint.mode.

What it looks like: "in vCenter, I see all the ESXi server's VM's be in a vMotioning state, at various percentages, some already done, but most not yet, and the LR VM that is amongst the ones that are not done yet. Then the webbrowser freezes and on my other monitor, where all those pings are running, all the pings to all devices and hosts are dead within a couple of seconds.

Question: Am I doing something wrong, that causes such total network outages, when a LR Vm is vmotioned? It happened twice this evening (we were patching the ESXi hosts) and the LR VM's where vmotioned around a few times. During two such vmotions, the entire network went down as described.

Does anyone else have such experiences?

When is this major bug in ESXi going to be fixed?

ESXi 6.5 was released a year ago. ESXi 6.5 Update 1 was released 4 months ago. This bug still persists which is one of the reasons we have not upgraded

Workstation 14 - Can't install host virtual adapter

Help,

I'm trying to get host connection (Workstation 14 on Windows 10 (1709 16299.125) host) to work. No success.

Applying virtual settings dialog stucks on "Updating vmnet8: Install host virtual adapter" for several minutes and settings won't stay.

No virtual adapters shown on: Device manager -> Network adapters

Reinstalled several times, works fine on other laptop (Win 10 1709 16299.64).

Any ideas?

Thanks,

JJ

Problem with virtual adapters

$

Hi all

My lab environment has 2 physical servers running ESXi and Workstation 14 on my PC running DNS, vCentre and the shared storage for the ESXi boxes.

This was all fine until the hard drive that Workstation was on failed. Initially I couldn't either uninstall or reinstall as setup insisted on trying to work on the failed drive. To install again I had to run a registry cleaner after which I managed to install it on a different drive. However, it did not install the default bridged vmnet0 or the associated virtual adapter. I have tried to create a custom network and install a virtual adapter so I can bridge my VMs out to the physical network.

When I tick the 'Connect host virtual adapter to this network' checkbox and press apply, it tries to install it, but it just hangs for ages and then clears the checkbox

I have tried reinstalling workstation, rebooting and using the repair option on the installer. I've also tried the restore defaults button, but nothing is working

I looked at a few other posts and it seems i'm missing the VMnetBridge registry key, which others have lost through security software intervening. I have no security software currently installed that would prevent Workstation reinstalling that key

Any help would be massively appreciated

Newly created array not appearing in ESXi

HP DL380 G5

ESXi 5.5.0

Smart Array P400

I've created the array using HP's command line utility via SSH using the command on 2x300 GB drives

hpssacli ctrl slot=1 create type=ld drives=1I:1:7,1I:1:8 size=300 raid=1

Great - lights are on and all is good - do a quick status check ( note the new array is array C )

array A

physicaldrive 1I:1:5 (port 1I:box 1:bay 5, SAS, 72 GB, OK)

physicaldrive 1I:1:6 (port 1I:box 1:bay 6, SAS, 72 GB, OK)

physicaldrive 2I:1:3 (port 2I:box 1:bay 3, SAS, 72 GB, OK)

physicaldrive 2I:1:4 (port 2I:box 1:bay 4, SAS, 72 GB, OK)

array B

physicaldrive 2I:1:1 (port 2I:box 1:bay 1, SAS, 36 GB, OK)

physicaldrive 2I:1:2 (port 2I:box 1:bay 2, SAS, 36 GB, OK)

array C

physicaldrive 1I:1:7 (port 1I:box 1:bay 7, SAS, 300 GB, OK)

physicaldrive 1I:1:8 (port 1I:box 1:bay 8, SAS, 300 GB, OK)

Problem I have now is that it's not appearing in the storage, even when I re-fresh it or try to add additional storage. Is there something else I need to do to the newly created array ? On a quick google I can't see anything. I'm wondering if it's because I created the mirror with the actual size of the drives however if this was going to be a problem I'm sure it would have bombed when I created it.

vCenter 6.5 - duplicate key value violates unique constraint “pk_vpx_vm_virtual_device”

$

Hello All,

Just wanted to share an issue I had and get feedback if anyone has experienced this... new bug?

My vCenter 6.5 server was running on a host which experienced a failure... I manually recovered the failed VM's onto another host, once all VM's were back online the vCenter started to crash as soon as I tried to view the properties of a specific VM (via the Webclient) which was also on that original failed host.

The second the properties loaded in the webgui, vCenter would shutdown with the following error:

"An unrecoverable problem has occurred, stopping the VMware VirtualCenter service. Error: Error[VdbODBCError] (-1) “ODBC error: (23505) – ERROR: duplicate key value violates unique constraint “pk_vpx_vm_virtual_device"

I asked DR google and couldn't really find anything specific to “pk_vpx_vm_virtual_device”... has anyone experienced this one before on other versions?

After some investigation I linked this back to the “Host USB Device” and I managed to solve my problem. As I couldn't find anything relevant to this issue I thought I would do a simple write up about it for anyone is interested / experiences the problem.

Cheers

vMan

UPDATE 11/03/2017: This issue has been patched with vCenter 6.5b, just search for "pk_vpx_vm_virtual_device". and you will find the details. If you face this issue in PROD and are not willing to try the fix below just contact VMware Support for help.

They suggest the work around...

Workaround from VMware: Unregister the problematic virtual machine from the host inventory and restart the vCenter Server. You might need to repeat this process if the failure happens again. (vMAN: which is fine if you know which VM is causing the issue but this is not obvious from the logs / errors without going into the DB - IMO)

ESXi 5.1 - Shows running on console, launches terminal window, but no login prompt.

Shows running on console, launches terminal window, but no login prompt.  If I try to access the logs, it freezes.  vSphere client will not connect.  SSH does not work.  VMs also are not contactable.  I rebooted the server.  ESXi seemed to load up fine.  The only difference is for some reason I am in WinSCP but am not able to do the same with PuTTY.

How secure would a Windows XP guest with host-only networking be?

My interpretation of the documentation is that such a VM would be as secure as one having no network adapter at all, but it doesn't hurt to double check to make sure I'm not somehow exposing the host/other guests/etc. to threats without being aware of it...

Adding Horizon Hostname

We have created a dev environment using VIO 3.1 and NSX 6.3.1 and all works well however due to the fact the during deployment we did not assign a VIP hostname so horizon is only accessible via the public IP and not any hostname as none was assigned.

How do we assign a hostname so that horizon can be accessed via public hostname and what needs to be done to use SSL both in horizon and noVNC ? There are multiple apache2 configu file and we are not sure what to change.

Localhost HTML Client problem on Windows 10 and MacOS High Sierra

FYI, the HTML Client that comes with SDK 6.5 or 6.5u1 has problem with the latest Java JDK on Windows 10 and MacOS High Sierra.

The client home page doesn't come up and the browser console shows errors such as:

Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token )

clarity-angular1.min.js:38 Uncaught SyntaxError: missing ) after argument list

and

(anonymous) @ init.js:6

folder-ui.min.js:1 Uncaught ReferenceError: angular is not defined

The work-around for Windows 10 is to use Java SDK 1.8.0_144

We haven't found any work-around yet for MacOS High Sierra.  Let us know if you have one!

Hi all,

In vRA 6.x, a user with support role couldn't see the "Properties" Tab for a VM in the Reconfigure Screen. Now, in vRA 7.3 they can see this tab.

Is there any way to hide that tab?

Thanks,

D.

Hello,

I am using Mobile Watch list 1.5.020000 (2434393) and when I try to connect a VM running Ubuntu 14.04 desktop with the VMware tooIs installed get this error message. I am running ESXi 5.5. I am not connecting through VPN and I am on the same network as the server. I can connect just fine through the vSphere client installed on a desktop machine. There have been several questions about this and no answer.

From reading the posts I have opened the following ports to no avail:

902

7331

7343

443

9443

I also tried to forward all of these ports to port 80 on the server but that did not work either.

Can anyone give me an answer?

Thank you,

I succesfully installed Horizon 7 with Blast Extreme protocol appreciating the new features.

My question is .. do you introduce this protocol also in ESXI in standalone way?

vSphere Mobile Watchlist Console not working!

Installed vSphere Mobile Watchlist from Google Play Store. Connected to our vCenter server. Console does not work for VMs.

After launching the console, an error message reads "The console has been disconnected. Close this window and re-launch the console to reconnect".

Same behavior on different VMs. Same behavior on Galaxy Tab 4 and Galaxy Note 3. Please fix!

Also, the "Send email as HTML" setting does not work. It place the HTML code in the email but the email format is still text, not html.

How to controll UDP via UI from a Linux with VMware Horizon Client (version 4.5.0)?

$

Hello everybody,

I'm trying to do all the test cases related to "6a. Horizon Client for Linux Test Cases (VMware Blast Extreme)" from the "Horizon Clients Certification Guide v14.12"

For the '6a.36 LnxClient-Blast: Controlling UDP via UI', UDP Setting should be controllable and work as expected when making changes in the Client UI,

The problem is that I don't see this on the Settings, where I can only verify H.264 so far.

After repeating all the steps described on this test and checking everything on the View Connection Server, View Administrator and Agent machine, I still don't get this as an Option in the Client UI.

Does anyone know why?

Thank you in advance for any help.
