[Bug] vROps 6.6.1 Dashboard Actions menu severely crippled

$

Seems I’ve encountered a possible bug in vROps 6.6.1 (clean deployment, onto vSphere 6.5U1 environment)

After doing basic configuration but before configuring any solutions, the Dashboard Actions menu gets severely limited/crippled.

Before I did any configurations (only deploy and initial setup), the dashboard actions menu looks like this:

After doing basic configurations (added SAML SSO auth source, import user Groups (2), configure SMTP), it is reduced to this:

When clicking on 'Manage Dashboards' the action icons are also reduced from

to this:

I've redeployed the vROps 6.6.1, and I was able to reproduce the problem:

  1. vRops 6.6.1 deployed (small). Before power on, increased disk2 to 500GB, and upgraded vHW to vmx-13
  2. Ran vROps Initial config. New instance. License applied here.
  3. Administration > Access > Password Policy > Disabled Password Change Policy (no expiring
    password)
  4. Administration > Access > [click] Authentication Sources > Add SAML SSO (vCenter)
  5. Changed KEYTABLE in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard to no-latin1.map.gz (but did not reboot)
  6. Added SAML SSO auth - source pointing to vCenter embedded PSC
  7. Imported two user Groups from our domain, one as full admins, and one as read only
  8. Configured SMTP outbound

Going to Dahsboards and click on actions = crippled menu.

I'm not sure where the bug manifested between 3 and 8. (Will try to redo it once more)

Reversing the settings (except keytable for console) does not fix the problem.

What annoys me is that I can't reproduce it in another site I've got. The main difference there is it is another Active Directory domain, but pretty much the same other than that. (hardware, vsphere). Both sites are new installs of vSphere 6.5 with migrated VMs from vSphere 5.5. the vROps is as stated a new deployment.

Any takers on what could be causing this?

I'm redeploying once more, and more carefully check the Dashboard between every change and with snapshots so I can og back.

Before I get down to it, should esxi 4.0 see a mirrored pair (BIOS level) as a single logical unit/datastore?   Currently have individual drives installed that are each seen as individual datastores.

Non-vSAN Ready Node Vendor Support

$

I'll kick off the vSAN challenge with a support related vSAN issue:

Overview

One of the first vSAN deployments I was involved with was built with components on the vSAN HCL but the solution was not built from ready-nodes.

While this configuration is fully supported by VMware, the hardware vendor was a little difficult to work with at first.

Challenge

We had a disk failure within vSAN and we logged this with the hardware vendor so that a new disk could be dispatched. I mentioned that the server was running vSAN but the support engineer did not understand that the new disk they dispatched needs to be on the VMware vSAN HCL.

Vendors may not ship the same disk, but they will ship the same type, speed and capacity as the failed disk. This is a problem for vSAN because only specific disks are supported so shipping any old disk for replacement might not be suitable for the customer.

Solution

The solution was to ask to speak to someone with vSAN knowledge within the team. The larger vendors have this service available and they instantly understand the issue. They were then able to ship a disk on the VMware vSAN HCL and this was swapped out on arrival without any issues.

I also logged an SR with VMware so that they could speak with the vendor to further explain the situation.

vCenter Alert or Logging for Permissions Change to occur on a VCENTER

Is there a way to setup an Alert or a way to find out when a Permission is added\modified in  vCenter.   Currently we have a custom alert setup that will send an email to our team mailbox when a Permission is added\modified\deleted,  but that alert only gives us the details of the folder and what acct was added.   It will not tell us who made the changes.    Need to find a way to find out who is making permissions modifications in our VCenter.   what account inititated that task.

Unless there is a way to pull this data directly from the database ?  Below is an example of the email notification we get today from the custom alert.

Open vCenter Access to the internet.

Hi there!

This will sound unbelievably stupid and it will probably won't make any sense, but I need to get access to the vSphere Web Client over the internet.

Why do I need to do this?

I just deployed 2 ESX hosts and started the vCenter Appliance. This Environment will be used for a project where about 10 people need to connect to my vCenter.

I don't want to give them access to my vpn because of trust issues.

I tried to achieve this by port forwarding. This worked great for the Web Client on just the ESXi not vCenter.

I activated port 80 and 443 for the web access and I can get to the first steps page but when I select one of the clients it should open the single sign on page but it tries to connect to the IP-Adress that I configured on vCenter eventhough i used port forwarding.

Is there any way I can fix it with port forqarding or are there any other solutions?

Thanks in advance!

Opening existing VMware Player 12.x Virtual Machines in VMware Player 14 fails

$

I recently upgraded to VMware Workstation Pro 14 from the latest version of 12.5.  I am running on a fully updated host running Ubuntu 16.04.03 LTS on a beefy Dell Precision 7710.

Virtual machines open fine in Workstation, but those that I was previously running without issue in VMware Player (VM HW version 12.x) now will not open in VMware Player 14.  This seems to be irrespective of the client OS as I have a Windows 7 and Ubuntu VM that now will not open in VMPlayer.  I get no obvious error unless I run from the command line, and when I do run from the command line I get a rather ambiguous "Fail to open executable: No such file or directory" error message.

So I turned to strace -eopen vmplayer to try and figure out what I am missing.  I got the normal errors but installed lzma and liblz1 due to the traced errors but nothing works.

I tried making a copy of the VMs and upgrading the VMware Tools and HW version in Workstation (then powering down and removing from inventory) but they *still * will not open in Player.

As a workaround I am running the VMs in VMware Workstation but a lack of forward compatibility in VMware Player is a concern.

I will update this topic if/as I find new data points or a solution.

hello newbie here. I was trying to update to high sierra and now I'm stuck. I have tryed doing a partition and adding efi file to that but didn't work. Anyone has a link with a guide to mount the apfs.efi after the fact? I have win 7 (SSD, no problems prior to the attempted update) and got 3 pics that will help trouble shoot the problem (I hope)...

HTML5 Multimedia Redirection feature doesn't work when Chrome is installed on App Volumes writable volume

$

Hello,

Not sure if this would be the right place to ask, but I am currently running Horizon 7.3.2 environment with Windows 10 LTSB 2016 (Build 1607) instant clone desktops. The desktop image has UEM 9.2.1 and App Volumes 2.13.1 installed, and we utilize both appstacks and writable volumes to support our user's use case.

I was trying out the HTML5 redirection feature (new to 7.3.1) using Windows Horizon client 4.6.1, ensuring that the HTML5 feature is enabled on vdm_agent policies, URL configured, and Google Chrome extension for HTML5 MMR installed. When I use the published app for Chrome (installed directly on RDS server), the HTML5 MMR feature works fine. When I tried it on the desktop where Chrome is installed on the writable volume, however, the extension doesn't seems to work. The extension icon will "color" up for a moment when Chrome is launched, but will soon turn into grey. Consequently, the redirection doesn't work and will play the video on the virtual desktop itself. Not sure if anyone else notice this?

I haven't tried this with Chrome installed directly on the image, but I assume it won't work either since extension files are installed inside the user's Chrome profile directory, within the Local AppData folder in the user profile.

The App Volumes agent is configured with the necessary registry item to allow Google Chrome extensions to function (i.e. assigning a drive letter to writable volume)

vm can not configure static IP when it network card in DPortGroup (a virtual distributed switch portgroup)

Hello,

I have a two ESXi hosts, they are both configured with a virtual distributed switch (called nsx-network)

I setup a CentOS7 vm (nsx-vm) connected with DPortGroup network.

Then I login the vm (nsx-vm). I try to configure a static IP for it.

22B20899-7548-46F6-A029-C37EC32A4164.jpg

In ifcfg-eno16780032 configure file, I wrote the configuration like below:

B8DB9089-62A9-4A81-90AC-AC21BBBBC003.jpg

Then I reboot the server, and check the static IP, but it not configuration.

22B20899-7548-46F6-A029-C37EC32A4164.jpg

When I run ifup, CentOS report error to me:

5FDBCC9C-2E28-4D32-A731-570ABE7A0898.jpg

So the vm network card ,in distributed port group, can not be configured with static IP ?? or is there something I configured wrong here?

Could anyone help? please guide me a bit. Thanks in advance.

UEM Profile Folder not Created for User.

$

Hello,

Is there a known factor or limitation on why a user's folder would not create under UEM Profile? The user has a hyphen in her name would that hinder the folder from being created? The user logs in fine and no error or warning comes up but every time she logs off and log back in she would have to redo her mail, printer etc since the profile folder is not being created. Since the profile folder did not create I can not look at the logs to tell me if there is any issues with her account. Is there another location I can take a look at in terms of logs.I have another user that has a hyphen in her name but her folder created without no issue and we have compared their AD accounts and everything seem to match. We are using Horizon 7.3.1 with UEM 9.2.1 instant clones. Any help on this would be much appreciated.

vRA 7.2 Add CDRom & Mount CDRom Error

Hi All,..

In order to enable the end user to mount an Iso file from his/her desktop, I have tried both, add CDrom & mount CDrom actions

However, both actions return with the error   (Failed to convert external resource "vm name". Script action com.vmware.vcac.asd.mappings/mapToVCVM failed.)

I don't know what is missing but I even tried to run the workflow from vRO & when it prompts for the VM name  & I give many vms names for VMs running in my vCenter,

the vRO can't find them although it is connected to the vcenter .

I appreciate your help regarding this issue.

Best Regards

List view "Cannot read property 'relationId' of undefined" after plugin deployment (regression in 6.5U1)

$

vCenter 6.5U1 has introduced a major regression when deploying plugins - the VMWare-controlled list views are broken. Selecting any list view for a custom object gives a blank page / permanent "busy" animation, and the status bar shows a warning icon with the error "Cannot read property 'relationId' of undefined".

This is not an issue with our plugin - deploying the original "chassis-b" sample from the 6.5U1 SDK to a 6.5U1 vCenter Server or VCSA shows exactly the same problem - I've attached a screenshot of the error and the built plugin package for reference.

This is a showstopper issue for us as it gives an extremely bad initial customer experience.

Logging out and back in continues to show the same failure. The only way to fix the issue is to restart the "vsphere-ui" service, or reboot the entire vCenter Server / VCSA. After a reboot, the list views work correctly until/unless the plugin is updated.

This is not an intermittent issue - we've repro'd it multiple times on at least 5 different clean installs of the 6.5U1 VCSA (using the official "VMware-VCSA-all-6.5.0-5973321.iso" image), as well as a Windows vCenter Server upgraded from 6.5.0d. On one occasion, we actually saw *all* list views broken with this error - for the VMWare-internal objects as well as our own - but that doesn't seem to be the typical behaviour.

The problem did *not* occur on previous builds, and we have proven that this is a regression between 6.5.0e and 6.5U1 - performing exactly the same actions using a clean installed VCSA of 6.5.0e works as expected.

This only seems to happen when using the proper deployment method (registering the plugin via ExtensionManager). Using the "pickup" method doesn't seem to show the same problem. This also only affects the HTML client - the Flex client works as expected.

Is this is a known issue? Is there any workaround we can offer to improve the customer experience, or a plan to issue an update to address it in the near future?

The repro steps were as follows:

1) Install VCSA 6.5U1 (using the "VMware-VCSA-all-6.5.0-5973321.iso" image).

2) After completing setup of the VCSA, log in, and create a Datacenter.

3) Go to the "Global Inventory Lists" and check that the lists appear to be working correctly.

4) Register the plugin using the prebuilt registration tool in the 6.5U1 SDK with the following command line:

extension-registration -action registerPlugin -c VMware -k com.vmware.samples.chassisB.html -n "ChassisB Client" -s "SDK sample adding chassis objects and relations (advanced version)" -v "6.5.0.10000" -url https://myvcenter/sdk -u administrator@vsphere.local -p password -show -pu https://myserver/chassisB-sample.zip -st 6F:6D:37:9E:B9:5E:61:6B:A9:4E:8E:C2:7B:5B:5A:46:6F:6F:A4:E4

5) Wait 5 minutes; no "Plugins have been installed or updated" banner appears, and no plugins appear on the right side of the "Home" page.

6) Log out and back in. The plugin is listed on the right side of the "Home" page, but no banner appears, and the "Chassis B" objects are not shown in the "Global Inventory Lists". Check that the list views are still working.

7) Log out and back in. This time, note that the "Chassis B" objects appear on the "Global Inventory Lists".

8) Select one of the "Chassis B" object categories. The "busy" bar remains shown, and the "warning" symbol appears on the status bar. Clicking the warning shows "Cannot read property of 'undefined'".

When performing the same steps on 6.5.0e, during step 6, the plugin is immediately available, and the list views for the custom objects work correctly.

Configured scratch location doesn't work after upgrade to ESXi 6.5

Hi,
My configured scratch location for some reason doesn't work after upgrading to ESXi 6.5.

I set up parameter ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation to a persistent storage. The folder exists and worked before the upgrade.

After each reboot ScratchConfig.CurrentScratchLocation is always set to /scratch while ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation is /vmfs/volumes/volume01/scratches/host01

I'm not sure if this is related but to upgrade ESXi I had to provide boot parameter preferVmklinux=TRUE as my USB drive wasn't visible and later I run these commands:

esxcli system settings kernel set -s preferVmklinux -v FALSE

esxcli system module set --enabled=false –m vmkusb

Thanks for your help in advance,

Lukasz

Automating VM move/migration

Hi,

I used the vCenter Converter Standalone to copy a VM from on vCenter to another.  I am wondering if that is a way to automate this.  Or is there an API I can use to script it?

Thanks,

VMWare on Windows 10 - Error: Insufficient permission to access the file

Application - VMWare Workstation 12 Player

Version - Build Number: 5813279 (latest version)

A couple of days ago, Windows 10 installed the Fall Creators Update on my PC.  Since then VMWare Player throws an error every time I attempt to Power On the VM.

Here's the error:

Could not get snapshot information: Insufficient permission to access the file.

Module 'Snapshot' power on failed.

Failed to start the virtual machine.

Here's what's in the vmware.log.

I've given the all users administrative ("Full Control" ) rights to the C:\Users\VM1234\Documents\Virtual Machine folder.  I even copied the virtual machine folder to a root folder - same error.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
