How to initiate an approval policy for re-configuring an already deployed vm in vRA.
I've recently moved our main backup system from Backup Exec 2014 to Backup Exec 15. It has gone horribly. (Not my idea to use Backup Exec. I was very familiar with it, and hadn't had too many issues with it previously, but I still knew its reputation. This decision was made before I joined the company. Not wanting to make waves, I went along with it and tuned up the old 2014 setup, and made the plans to move to the new BE 15 setup.)
On BE 2014, I managed to adjust things to get the backups stable and performing OK. They weren't great, but they were OK. The old backup server only had 1Gb networking, and the previous admin had it set up with 2 1Gb links software bonded (Windows 2012r2 link bonding) and the iSCSI storage also used just a 1Gb link. It was able to back up even our largest file shares in just over 28 hours, so all the full backups could get done over a weekend. Mostly, backups would average 500-600MB/min.
I start out with the new backup system, the exact same server and storage, but with 10Gb networking using an Intel dual port X520 and Cisco Nexus switches, one link for network and the other for iSCSI traffic. The first 4 backups I put on there worked perfectly, and I was seeing 1.3-1.8 Gb traffic on the server network side and 400-700Mb/s traffic on the iSCSI side. The actual backups, 3 VMs and one physical machine, are showing 1300-1700MB/min speeds in Backup Exec. No problem, I figure. This should make things a lot better. It's tested and ready to take on the rest of the backups.
Not so much.
Upon moving the rest of the servers (VMs and physical) over to the new backup system, it slowed down horribly. The physical machines backup slowly, at about 600-700MB/min, but they aren't horrible. For the VMs, though, I'm getting 180-240MB/min for all the backups, including our big file servers. It is taking upwards of 5 days to complete the jobs. Even the previously fast backups have slowed to the same crawl. I've tried both direct VM backups without GRT, VM backups with GRT, and agent backups from the VM OS. All go at the exact same crawl. The VM hosts aren't even close to taxed. I can run 10 VM backups simultaneously and not impact the performance of the VMs' services at all. In fact, there's more than enough performance to spare. The VM OSes (Windows 2008r2) report less than 20% (dual) CPU usage, less than 10% disk busy time, and less than 10% (~100Mb) network usage. The backup storage isn't getting taxed, either. The backup storage shows less than 1Mb of activity over the 10Gb link. The storage shows less than near zero busy time on the RAID.
I've gone to Veritas's support, and they have nothing. They were the ones who suggested switching up to non-GRT VM backups, and later direct agent backups through the VM's OS. None of their suggestions have helped at all. They decided to write off the support ticket saying we have inferior backup storage, but the storage sees almost no activity. They've completely abandoned me. I'm about a week away from having to roll back, and my job is likely in danger because of it. (It's not totally this issue threatening my job. Long story, but I am good at many things, just not the stuff we do at this company. I'm certainly not dumb.)
I'm at my wit's end. I can't figure this out, and Veritas can't figure it out. Has anyone else out there seen this behavior from BE 15? Is there a solution to this?
Hi everyone,
Hope you all are doing well. I am new to this technology of VMWare and aspire to learn and get proficient into it.
Can anybody exactly let me know, when snapshot, clone and template are used. Also provide the differences between them and in which situations one is preferred over the other. Appreciate your time and support in answering to this question. Thanks in advance and god bless you all!
Hello
I would like to have 2 screens, in my vm hosted in an ESX version 6, with a resolution of 1920 * 1080 for each of the screens.
For the moment, I find myself limited to 1600 * 1200 on the second.
Why?
I would like to see dynamic DRS Groups.
Ether by using wildcard or using VMware Tags.
I have many customers requesting this features.
as described in the topic, how to solve this problem?!
virtual win7
View 7.2 running under ESXi 6.0 Update 3
160 View desktops with this numbering scheme: Student001, Student002, ...Student160
I remove Student007, View spins up a new desktop to keep the total at 160 but the new desktop is named Student161 instead of Studen007
In other words I still have 160 desktops but Student007 is not there but Student161 is
Never saw this behavior under previous versions of View. Under previous versions all desktops were always consecutively numbered
Any idea if there is a fix?
I have macOS 10.12 Sierra installed on VMWare workstation pro. MACos seems to work well. Does anyone know how I can get XCode 9 to load.
It says sorry, you need to have OS 10.12.
Which I seem to have ok, but on VMWare 12.5 (? well the latest version as of 9/23/2017 = today's download) XCode won't load.
Got Ideas ?
Pls LMK, thanks, Ken in Seattle

Hi guys,
I've a short question regarding powerCLI in case of DR test.
I try to automate the powerOn of some VMs based on priority to start applications in the right order.
During DR test, some ESXi servers are shut down with the VM on them. Then we want to restart them on the secondary site (Active/active storage underneath).
When I start the VM using VCenter interface, DRS will de-register then register the VM on a surviving host, I'm quite happy with that.
BUT, when I execute the Start-VM cmdlet on a VM that where running on a host that is now marked as disconnected (and the VM has also the disconnected flag) I've an error syaing that the host is not available and therefore the cmdlet cannot start the VM.
Do you know if there is another cmdlet available or another way to start VM only on connected hosts? and then let DRS do the job as using the VCenter interface. Or I've to automate the unregister / register stuff?
Thanks beforehand.
Morning Fellows VMer's
I have a problem which I wonder if anyone can help with please - I am running VMWare Workstation 12 under Ubuntu 16.04. I am trying to run the patch that will allow a Mac OSX to be configures but am getting the following error - wondered if anyone can help and get this problem sorted.
This is the message I get:-

Good morning,
We're experiencing an odd issue when a user locks their local workstation then unlocks it, there's a weird delay in the VDI desktop. If the user locks their desktop with Ctl+Alt+Del, then selects lock workstation. When they unlock it, the VDI session will appear hung for a couple seconds, then will popup at the ctrl+alt+del screen. When a user locks their screen with the windows key and L then unlocks, the VDI session will hang for a bit longer, then locks, thus requiring you to unlock the VDI session as well. We're on version Horizon View 7.2, Client 4.4.
I looked into recursive mode a bit, but this won't be applicable for all of the situations (not all machines will be domain joined and using the log on as current user). Has anyone else experienced this?
Thanks!
Mike
Hi,
Recently I upgraded to version 6.1.4 and seems to be I began to get all sort of errors. This one I see more often:
09/22/2017 01:12:30: Backup job named "job3" completed.
09/22/2017 01:02:39: Appliance has changed from "Full Access" to "Admin". Backup functionality is no longer available.
09/22/2017 01:00:30: Backup job named "job3" started.
Checking #dpnctl status:
dpnctl: INFO: gsan status: degraded
all other services are up.
How to get instance to normal state ?
Hi,
i try to convert a physical CentOS 5.5 to a virtual machine on a ESXi 6.0 Environment.
The operation fails every time at 30% with this error message:
FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: '/usr/lib/vmware-converter/copyFileSystem.sh did not finish producing output after 3600 seconds'
Maybe some one could have a look at the attached logfiles and point me in the right direction?
Trying to install the 2017 Tech Preview and am getting this during the installation,
Service 'VMware Authorization Service'
(VMAuthdService) failed to start. Verify that you have
sufficient privileges to start system services.
In the event log it shows event ID 7024
The VMware Authorization Service service terminated with the following service-specific error:
%%6000009
Running Windows 10, 1703 Build 15063.483, latest updates. 12.5.7 was uninstalled and the system was rebooted twice before the install was attempted. Folder permissions have been verified. Done all the old things from the previous versions. WMI is running, UAC is off,
Will try again in a bit after I look into this more but just wanted to see if others were getting this as well.
Hello
As the title says, I've just upgraded my environment to Horizon 7.3 and now my pools are no longer creating new VMs. At all.
I've even created a new pool with a new template, but nothing is happening and there are no errors thrown anywhere. I've checked the view administrators, the connection servers and the view composer for logs and windows event log, but there is no trace as to where the process is stopping.
Environment details:
View Connection Servers: 7.3.0 build-6571861
View Composer: 7.3.0 build-6517251
vCenter: 6.5.0 build-5973321 (6.5u1)
ESXi: 6.5.0 build-5969303 (6.5u1) - still have a few hosts on ESXi 6.5.0 build-5310538 (6.5d) as well, but only in certain clusters and I've tested pool deployment in both pure 6.5u1 clusters and "mixed" clusters. It makes no difference.
Cloud Pod Federation is up and running, I've got 2+2 connection servers with 12 hosts in each pod.
The mentioned pools are Full Clones, so no Linked or Instant clones to complexify this scenario.
I still have snapshots of my horizon components on 7.2.0 so a rollback is possible, but I'd very much like to resolve this as 7.3 seems like a good release on paper.
Does anyone have a clue to where I should start digging? Have anyone seen this before? I'm a bit lost right now, but I though I'd swing by VMTN and post before I launch an SR with VMware.
Thanks!
