Distributed Firewall odd behavior

$

Hello guys, I have a NSX lab which we use to show both NSX capabilities as well as the VMs included in it (which are security vendors' virtual appliances)

So we have the following scenario:

On the bottom-left, we have Security vendor#1, with subnet 10.1.10.0 /24.

IP address: .4, .5 and .6 are the Virtual Appliances for that vendor and IP address .99 is a W7 PC for tests.

On the bottom-right, we have security vendor#2, with subnet 10.1.20.0/24

IP address .99 is a web server.

Now, we have a couple of rules deployed in the NSX's Distributed Firewall as follows:

# RuleNamesourcedestinationserviceactionapplied to
1block test1vDS1vDS2HTTPblockDistributed FW
2block test 2vDS2vDS1anyblockDistributed FW

Rule #1 works fine, we test connection through port 80 from 10.1.10.99 to 10.1.20.99 it's been blocked. Nothing odd there.

Rule #2 it's a little bit off, when I test communication from 10.1.20.99 (windows web server) to 10.1.10.99 (PC test), the rule works. It blocks pings, ftp connections, etc.

If test communication from 10.1.20.99 to 10.1.10.4-5-6 the rule doesn't work. The communication is allowed.

Any idea why is this happening?

Is there any requisite this VMs need to have in order for the distributed firewall works correctly?

Unable to set custom ip address provided by vRealize Automation approver

I seem to be missing something and I cannot figure out what. I'm hoping someone has run into this and can help me out.

I have a self-service provisioning portal set up to enable my users on vRealize Automation version 7.2.0. In it's current state, it will clone a template, assign a provided name, storage, and network.

I now need to customize the clone to specific purposes, and I'm starting with assigning it a valid IP. This is set by the approver using the custom property VirtualMachine.Network0.Address. It appears to be passing the value correctly, but it does not get assigned to the guest machine.

When I view the machine within vRealize Automation, I see my lab IP of x.x.0.9 assigned to the guest machine's Network Adapter 0, but it appears that it is still trying to obtain a DHCP address as it is showing it's Primary IP address as 169.254.221.80. This matches the IP assigned within the guest, but I need it to have my approver's assigned IP of x.x.0.9.

The blueprint has a single object for the virtual machine, configured to clone a template.

These is no network object, as I read several post that said to leave this off if I want to assign my own IP.

In the pre-approval configuration, I have the approver setup to provide values for:

VirtualMachine.Network0.Address

VirtualMachine.Network0.SubnetMask

VirtualMachine.Network0.Gateway

VirtualMachine.Network0.PrimaryDns

VirtualMachine.Network0.DnsSuffix

That is as complicated as my setup is, but I cannot get it to do what I need. Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I have following configuration:

1.PNG

On ESXi 6 (ESXi-1) I configure following Network:

2.PNG

On Windows 2012 (AD) I configure following network:

3.PNG

Virtual Network Editor looks like this:

4.PNG

Now, when i don't run ESXi than Windows is responsive- meaning i can use mouse and keyboard .But when i run ESXi than Windows freezes.

What to do ?

why would ISO file share going offline cause replication to fail?

The setup for this one is that I have on one of my VMware vSphere ESXi 6 U2 hosts, a Windows 2012 R2 Virtual Machine that hosts a SQL Server 2012 instance. I had just run the upgrade from Windows Server 2012 to the 2012 R2 edition a few weeks before. The ISO file for the install was located on a datastore on our NAS. At some point during the day, the NAS went offline, causing the datastore to be unavailable. Since I had completely forgot to dismount the ISO file, the cdrom device of the VM was now attached to a ghost ISO file. This caused snapshot functionality to not work. The 3rd party replication software would start a snapshot, then I think it timed out, leaving an orphaned snapshot, then continued to do this something like 42 times.

I was able to apply most of the steps in this forum post https://communities.vmware.com/thread/481804?tstart=0 to resolve the issue, as my situation was almost identical. I did have to power off the VM first, and I had to use the desktop client to edit the VM configuration, as the web client would not allow me to save the configuration even after editing the .vmx file.

I am hoping someone here might be able to explain why would the cdrom device mapped to an ISO file on a datastore that became unavailable cause snapshots to fail? It seems like something that is either a glitch in VMware error handling, or something that administrators need to be very cautious about, because it could have catastrophic consequences related to disaster recovery capability. Had this happened overnight, and I was unable to stop the replication schedule in time, it could have filled the hard drive partition and caused the VM to go offline.

I know I can avoid it happening again by making sure ISO files are always detached after use, but it seems like this could be dangerous as not everyone is going to detach ISO files every time as soon as they are done. I am concerned it may happen again unless I can configure an automatic setting or alert to at least notify me of the issue.

Can someone point me to any information or provide any explanation of this issue? Thanks in advance.

ESXi Fresh Install creates a large VMFS.

Hi,

I just did a fresh install of ESXi 6.5 on the same system I had previously ran 6.0 on.  This time after the install the disk I installed ESXi to was consumed entirely, leaving nothing available for any other uses.  I was wondering why the ESXi install allocated the entire disk to the VMFS, was this something I did on my setup, or is this the way it goes now?  I have other disks, but I don't like the idea of so much space being lost to just sit empty in ESXi.  Here is a list of the partitions on this LUN and it has greyed out the New Datastore and Increase Datastore Size options for this one.

1. EFI System (3.97 MB)

5. Basic Data (249.98 MB)

6. Basic Data (249.98 MB)

7. VMware Diagnostic (109.98 MB)

8. Basic Data (285.98 MB)

9. VMware Diagnostic (2.5 GB)

2. Basic Data (4 GB)

3. VMFS (1.81 TB)

Is there anyway to resize the VMFS, probably from the command line or is this an installation mistake or even just the way things are now?

Thanks for any help.

Change the name displayed by vRealize Automation portal

After logging into the vRA Tenant Portal, across the top, to the right of the "Header" by default you get:

"Welcome, 12345678. | Preferences | Help | Logout"

Our Active Directory usernames are numeric based. (e,g, Jon Doe username is "12345678")

The user-id value, guessing is either "CN" or "sAMAccountName".

Is there some way to change the value of username displayed to say "UPN" from the AD (e.g. Jon.Doe@domain.com) instead of the numeric user-id?

Thanks

Caminho para tirar Certificação VCP?

Olá!

Eu fiz o curso vSphere 6: Configure, Install e Management.

exFAT problem: Major read/write performance delays after moving VM to exFAT External SSD over USB 3.0

I just recently moved my VM from my MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2015, 16 GB of RAM; VMware Fusion pid=20152 version=8.5.3 build=build-4696910) to an external Samsung 850 Pro SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure and the VM (Windows 2012 Server) completely locks up with a spinning beach ball for a few seconds at a time.  The VM performed superbly from the MacBook's internal SSD prior to moving it to the external.

There is obviously something going on with the virtualized hard disk on the external drive as I am now seeing constant entries like the following in my vmware.log every few seconds:

2017-03-01T12:46:05.655-07:00| vmx| I125: ide0:0: Command WRITE(10) took 2.088 seconds (ok)

2017-03-01T12:46:10.707-07:00| vmx| I125: ide0:0: Command WRITE(10) took 5.051 seconds (ok)

2017-03-01T12:46:13.677-07:00| vmx| I125: ide0:0: Command READ(10) took 2.359 seconds (ok)

2017-03-01T12:46:16.140-07:00| vmx| I125: ide0:0: Command READ(10) took 2.463 seconds (ok)

2017-03-01T12:46:19.216-07:00| vmx| I125: ide0:0: Command READ(10) took 2.235 seconds (ok)

2017-03-01T12:46:21.723-07:00| vmx| I125: ide0:0: Command READ(10) took 2.507 seconds (ok)

2017-03-01T12:46:24.707-07:00| vmx| I125: ide0:0: Command WRITE(10) took 2.119 seconds (ok)

CPU utilization doesn't seem to be a factor as there is low CPU utilization on both the host and guest.

I ran a speed test on the external SSD and am confident that the drive is performing normally.  The Blackmagic text reports write speeds of just under 300 MB/s and read speeds of over 420 MB/s on the external drive, which should be plenty fast to run this VM. I have successfully run an earlier version of this VM (albeit over a year ago) from this same external drive and laptop, with very good performance, albeit on VMware Fusion 8.

Does anyone have any insight as to why I'm getting such delays since moving this VM to an external drive?

Message was edited by: Lacer Modified the title to indicate the cause of the problem: an exFAT-formatted drive.

My computer went nuts, and I had to reformat my hard drive and start from scratch.

I think my old OS was 16.X and that is what gave me problems.

i have installed 14.x, reinstalled mworkstation, and keep getting the following:

Could not open /dev/vmmon: No such file or directory.

I found an article that said the drivers were not registered, and I went through their recommendation, but it is still

coming up with the exact same error.

I tried uninstalling the latest version and installing the exact version I had before the crash.  SAme thing.

Anyone have a good idea that can help me out?

After my Synology array automatic upgrade and subsequent reboot, my (3) ESXi nodes lost access to their iSCSI datastore. Reset of the ESXi nodes and the array have not allowed me to recover the iSCSI datastore. The other devices, NFS and other file partitions are OK on the array and no errors are apparent.

The datastore device, has a label, partition table and VOMA check returns no errors:

Reverse Path Forwarding for Multicast traffic

$
0
0

I currently have an ESG setup to talk to my customers outside my environment. On the inside of that ESG I have multiple other ESGs connected that in turn each pass and route data to their respective tenant virtual machines. Each set of virtual machines has the same IPs but use different port numbers. So when traffic hits the main externally facing ESG it NATs to the correct internal ESG and then NATs again to the correct VM IP address.

This all works well as all the traffic I have received thus far is TCP point-to-point.

The issue that just arose is that a new client has a system that is going to send multicast traffic. However, depending on the source IP address the multicast traffic will be destined to only one specific tenant set of Virtual machines.

How do I go about setting up reverse path forwarding on the ESGs to ensure the multicast traffic goes to one and only one tenant?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello all well I been having problems with my vCSA for some time now. and i cant found anything on google what will fix my problem. The problem is after rebooting my ESXi my vCSA web GUI will not loud when i go to the main site i get this Error:

503 Service Unavailable (Failed to connect to endpoint: [N7Vmacore4Http20NamedPipeServiceSpecE:0x00007f0ec80aaf10] _serverNamespace = / action = Allow _pipeName =/var/run/vmware/vpxd-webserver-pipe)

But if i go to "https://********/vsphere-client" i can login but i get a error on the top of the screen (see below) and none of the VM's or ESXi popup.

Could not connect to one or more vCenter Server systems:

https://********:443/sdk

Only way i can fix this is to delete the vCSA and reinstall it. I also tried upgrading to the newest build 6.5.0a on the ESXi host and vCSA and still after a reboot vCSA comes up with at 503 error (i was running just 6.5). I can get in to SSH and the web management on port 5480 and all the health statuses are saying "Good". I can not get in to sFTP to copy out files like the logs files. I have not change the IP of the ESXi or vCSA. On my network i am using a UBNT ERLite‑3 router and I have the MAC and IP set in the DHCP table. From anyware on the network i can ping it by name and IP and if i do a NSLOOKUP it comes back correctly. I also shutdown the vCSA and try to ping in and i get no replay (just checking to make sure there is no duplicate IP's). Below are the service running and stopped on vCSA.

Running:

applmgmt lwsmd vmafdd vmcad vmdird vmdnsd vmonapi vmware-cis-license vmware-cm vmware-content-library vmware-eam vmware-perfcharts vmware-psc-client vmware-rhttpproxy vmware-sca vmware-statsmonitor vmware-sts-idmd vmware-stsd vmware-vapi-endpoint vmware-vmon vmware-vpostgres vmware-vpxd-svcs vmware-vsm vsphere-client vsphere-ui

Stopped:

pschealth vmcam vmware-imagebuilder vmware-mbcs vmware-netdumper vmware-rbd-watchdog vmware-sps vmware-updatemgr vmware-vcha vmware-vpxd vmware-vsan-health

I have found that some people having the same problem and they were able to just restart the "vsphere-client" and then start it but that does not work for me. I also tried when i installed vCSA with DHCP instead of a static IP.. vCSA got the right IP but after I reboot the ESXi I still got the 503 error. "pbraren" from HERE had some good luck with this but it did not work for me .

If anyone have any suggestions and need more info please let me know.

Thanks,

Steve

Dear members;

i have deployed a Juniper vSRX 15.1 (which runs as a virtuilized instance under Wind River Linux) as per standard documents:

http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/vsrx15.1x49/information-products/pathway-pages/security-vsrx-vmware-install-guide-pwp.pdf

But when i connect to the console over a network...i get a blank screen as shown in figure below:

Capture.PNG

Screenshot 2016-07-13 07:57:36.png

As per esxi connection list:

[root@localhost:~] esxcli network ip connection list | grep 6666

tcp         0       0  192.168.0.253:6666               192.168.0.104:35994  ESTABLISHED     35715  newreno  vmx

tcp         0       0  :::6666                          :::0                 LISTEN          35715  newreno  vmx

the connection is established......

Please can anyone help with his strange behavior..otherwise other VM's are accessible over console without any issue...Moreover have a valid Enterprise Plus License....

Waiting eagerly for your kind replies.
