Download vRO appliance with VMUG advantage subscription
Greetings,
I'm working on some rest integrations between ServiceNow and other things. One of the items I wanted to document is vRO as an end point. I have a VMUG advantage subscription but can't seem to find the link for the vRO appliance. Has anyone been able to get vRO?
Thanks for the advice!

Windows 10 Updates with VMware Network Adapter
Has anyone found a solution to stop Windows 10 update from downloading updates while having the Mac Host connected to a metered connection? The VMware Network Adapter shows up as a wired connection which cannot be set to metered connection in Windows 10.
I've worked around this by disconnecting the adapter with I am traveling but sometimes I forget and remember after Windows 10 has downloaded 100's of MB's worth of updates on an LTE connection. It's VERY frustrating.
The Key not work with Notebook Toshiba

virtualizing active directory local development
This is my current development setup,
PC1 - Windows 10 and Visual Studio 2015
PC2 - Windows 2012 R2 (Domain Controller, SQL Server, etc..)
Most of my applications runs against Active Directory and SQL Database, I think I could use a single PC, virtualizing either Windows 10 (Dev Setup) or the Windows server 2012 (Domain controler, sql, etc..)
What is the better approach, virtualize PC1 or PC2?
Ps. I'm planning to use VMWare Workstation Pro 12.
HA Question?
Hi,
We are currently running 5.1 Update 3 with the following HA settings applied
Restart priority - High
Host Response - Leave Powered on
VM Monitoring - Disabled
Datastore Heart beating - Select any of the cluster datastores. Then checking the heartbeat datastores I see that vsphere has selected 2 datastores for its heartbeat.
We had an issue with a single host where it dropped its datastores. Virtual machines were still pinging as they were still in memory but they weren't in a healthy state. Virtual machines didn't HA onto other hosts in the cluster until we rebooted the ESXi host that had the storage issue.
Can someone please explain why servers didn't HA on the ESXi which had no SAN storage available to it. I would of thought it would of kicked in as there would be no heartbeat for the datastores.
Thanks.
Developing plug-ins for vRealize 7.0
Hi
I am trying to use Eclipse for developing a plugin for vRO 7.0. The official vRO plugin-SDK page suggests that the SDK is packaged with the appliance for version 7.0. How do I download the SDK? Is the location of SDK within the appliance mentioned somewhere?
Thanks

Shared Folders
Hi,
I have VMware Workstation Pro 12 running on Windows 7 and hosting Ubuntu Linux.
There is a folder in Windows 7 that I am sharing with Ubuntu through the Shared Folders feature of VMware Workstation Pro and I would like to get more information on how concurrent access by both operating system is managed. I searched in the documentation but did not find anything relevant.
I will have users in both systems accessing files in the shared folder at the same time.
Thank you,
Fabio Lanza
Penetration Testing on vCenter
Has anyone done Penetration Testing specifically focused on vCenter Server, vCloud Director and ESXi? I'm not finding any good resources on this. Any help on this appreciated and private message appropriately if the content is sensitive.
Thanks!
Client integration plugin critical security advisory VMSA-2016-0004
I'm not clear exactly what the issue is on this "critical" vulnerability. Is the issue that if someone logs into vcenter admin privileges with the web client, then visits a malicious website while they are logged in, that the malicious website code could take over their session and get control of vCenter without the person seeing what is happening? Not sure I understand the risk...can someone clarify?
VMware Workstation 12.1.1 Pro fails to install network drives on CentOS 6.8 host
Just upgraded my CentOS Server from 6.7 (where VMware Workstation 12.1.1 worked fine) to 6.8.
After a reboot VMware did it's usual thing where it wanted to re-install it's drives. It failed at installing the network component. Here are my logs:

Why can't "Shared VMs" not allow to share folders with the host and why does copy/paste not work on them? :-((
I want to set up a "mini build-server" for our team. Since VMware Player is not supported anymore I had to use VMware Workstation and I somewhat successfully have set things up. But now more and more annoyances surface!
To allow the autostarting of VMs they obviously need to be "shared". But it seems, that with that there goes the nuisance that these VMs cannot share folders any more with the host. And it also seems, that Copy/Paste does not work with these "shared VMs".
Is there a work-around to get these features working also with "shared VMs"?
It is VERY annoying and time consuming to always have to shuttle these VMs between shared and non-shared mode just to be able to transfer some data or new code versions to them!
any way to speed this up? setting advanced settings
this takes quite a long time (5 minutes for about 70 items) per host. any ideas on how to speed this up (hit the host directly at console, run async etc.)
$vmhosts = Import-Csv ".\vmhosts.csv" $advsettings = Import-Csv ".\advsettings.csv" Write-Host " " foreach ($vmhost in $vmhosts) { # Get Start Time $startDTM = (Get-Date) foreach ($advsetting in $advsettings) { Get-AdvancedSetting -Entity $vmhost.name -Name $advsetting.setting | Set-AdvancedSetting -Value $advsetting.value -Confirm:$false } # Get End Time $endDTM = (Get-Date) # Echo Time elapsed "Elapsed Time: $(($endDTM-$startDTM).totalseconds) seconds" }

WS 12.1 screen corruption when using 4K displays
I just upgraded my Windows 10 x64 PC to dual 4K monitors (which looks amazing BTW). I'm running Workstation 12.1.1 and inside my guest Windows 10 x64 Enterprise VM I get fairly frequent screen corruption. This happens in both "Windowed" mode and in Unity. For example, sometimes the Outlook toolbar becomes a mishmash of black, random graphics, and other "trash". The VM has the latest VMware tools installed, and all current Windows 10 updates. The physical GPU is a nVidia GTX 760 Ti.
Any advice? Fortunately/unfortunately I'm a vExpert so while I have a Workstation 12 key, I can't open support tickets on it.
Resizing VIrtual disk (Win10 and Fusion 8.1.1)
I'm having some trouble figuring out what is happening with my Guest OS sizing.
I have a WIndows 10 guest running on my MAC in Fusion 8.1.1 (mac os 10.11.2)
In setting general, the disk shows up as using 25GB with no unallocated space to clean up. I've just cleaned it.
In the hard drive settings it shows up as an 800GB disk (which is larger than my actual drive by a large amount).
I've gone into the guest and shrunk the volume to 400GB, but the disk manager won't let me shrink it any smaller for some reason. It's showing 25GB of used space out of 400. In disk manager is says size of avaiable shrink is now zero. so i can't go any smaller.
My issue is that I keep running out of space on the VM...which i don't understand, because the volume has plenty of room and there is space on the drive and I'm not using much on the VM.
I would like to shrink the VM, but I can't find an option to do that.
any help would be appreciated.

I have a workflow to create a server inventory. It runs some WMI/Powershell to do this. When a user requests service I wanted their email address to be sent through to the vRO workflow and into powershell as a parameter.
I used the _asd_requestedBy variable and created a hidden Requestor variable (${_asd.requestInfo_~requestedBy~emailAddress)) as shown below...
When the workflow runs the variable 'Requestor' is populated with the email address perfectly.
My question is how can I now consume that variable in my vRO workflow?
vCenter 6 and smart card authentication / not prompting for certificate (web client)
Whenever I connect to the web client, the browser isn't prompting me to select a certificate. There is almost no documentation for troubleshooting smart card authentication for the web client so I'm hoping that someone has been able to get it work.
Here's what I've done so far:
- I have the PSC configured for smart card authentication
- I have the root and issuing certificates loaded in the PSC
- I have an Active-Directory identity source configured (and tested)
- I've replaced the vCenter SSL certificates with trusted certs from our CA
- I've replaced the user certs in PSC with trusted certs from our CA
- The certs all have unique subjects and the FQDN in the subject-alt
I've tested this in IE and Chrome and the "Use Smart Card Authentication" checkbox is visible on the login page but the browser never prompts for the cert. I'm not getting any certificate errors (that I can see) and the SSO logs on the server aren't giving any errors. The smart card is working fine with other applications including other web-based authentications.
Here is some relevant output:
C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\VMware Identity Services>sso-config.bat -get_tc_cert_authn

Raw Device Mappings is greyed out
Hello everyone. I am an EXSi/VMware noob so I'm a bit out of my comfort zone. I have a Supermicro motherboard with an onboard SAS controller that is supported in EXSi 6. I have eight 4TB drives attached to the SAS HBA and 2 SSD drives connected to the onboard SATA. I was able to add all the drives as datastores and that works fine. But I need to dedicate several complete drives to one VM and I have not been able to get this to work as the RDM option is greyed out no matter which VM I try. I tried removing one of the Hard Drives from the datastores (it's gone) but I still don't see it as an option (and now I can't see it when I try to add it back as a datastore but that's another issue).
I've been researching this issue and I've tried disabling the RDMFILTER option in Advanced Settings and no go. I tried flowing the process in KB article 1017530 (Raw Device Mapping for Local Storage I get the following error:
vmkfstools -z /vmfs/devices/disks/t10.ATA_____TS32GSSD25S2DM___________________________201009163653400631A4:9 /vmfs/volumes/APPSSD/RDM/rdm9.vmdk
Failed to create virtual disk: The system cannot find the file specified (25).
I thought maybe I needed to create the RDM folder in the store so I did it and then I got a new message:
Failed to create virtual disk: Operation not permitted (65545).
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Re: vCenter 6 and smart card authentication / not prompting for certificate (web client)
I am searching for the same answer. I am stuck with the error, "Make sure the smart card is inserted properly. Close your browser window then retry."
I have done the same steps as the Original Poster except that I have not replaced my SSL and user certificates with trusted ones. I therefore get untrusted certificate warnings before I log in.
I did do the following two steps in order to progress my issue slightly:
- Added my vCenter Server FQDN to the Local Internet sites and Trusted Sites (through Group Policy).
- Installed the Client Integration Plugin
I can log in with Smart Card authentication if I select "Use Windows Session Authentication." However, I have multiple certificates and do not want to use my Windows session certificate to administer the vCenter Server. The vSphere Web Client does not prompt me for certificates, so I cannot switch to my other certificate. Likewise, I do not want to login to Windows and/or open Internet Explorer with my Administrator certificate. These are not security best business practices; and boy does my organization like their best business practices.
Smart Card certificates work fine for all other websites and applications.
