Auto startup/shutdown settings for guest keep replicating each time I access the properties

Greetings,

I have a single ESXi 5.5 host with a single Win 2012 std server guest.   I have a second guest but it is not in production. Several months ago, I had "thought" I enabled auto startup and shutdown for this particular guest.  Due to power issues in the building today, I had the occasion to shutdown the guest, and power off the host completely.   Upon rebooting the host, my guest never started (automatically). I connected to the host via vsphere client, and started it manually.  No issues.

I decided to check the auto startup/shutdown settings and it was set to manual.  So, either I never actually set it to automatic (and I am just having memory issues within my head (not uncommon for me)) or I DID actually set it, and something has happened where it became disabled or reverted back to the default.

That aside, I went in to the auto start properties and as mentioned above, found it disabled, I was able to enable it, but when it came back to the screen (after clicking OK), it displayed TWO of each of my VM's in the auto start screen.  I went back in to see if I could edit/delete/remove the extras (I didn't find a means of doing it), and when I came back out of the screen there were THREE VMs listed in the pane. See attached.  Does anyone know what is happening here and how I can remedy the situation?

Am I just being an idiot and missing the obvious?

Thanks.

Is it possible to control the formatting of the description on a Catalog Item?

With or without providing carriage returns the description text provided for a Catalog item turns into a blob of text that is bunched together (And possibly truncated).

I am curious if there is a way to control this so that where you have placed carriage returns they will remain in-place in the presentation to the end user.

Thanks in advance!

Several VMs left suspended prior to V8 upgrade, now won't start and can't be shut down

I have several VMs that I had left suspended while I was running Fusion V7, and had forgotten about them when I did the upgrade to V8.  I am unable now to shut these VMs down, nor have I found a way to abort them (or any other method to get them to a halted state).  I do not need to preserve their running state...  I just don't want to lose the virtual disk images.

So, in short without starting these VMs (which I apparently can't do right now), is there a way to abort their running states?

Thanks,

Ken

Datastore creation using EMC VNXe3100 and ESXi 6.0.0 update 1

Hi

In the past with ESX 5.1 and 5.5, I could use the EMC Vnxe3100 gui to create and automatically create VMFS datastores on the ESXi hosts.

I have upgraded one host (HP DL360p Gen 8) to the latest HP custom image ESXi 6.0.0 Update 1 version 600.9.4.34 released on November 2015 and based on ESXi 6.0.0 Update 1 Vmkernel Release Build 3073146.

when I use the EMC tool, it goes through the process and I can watch the events where the EMC tool logs in the ESXi host, creates the LUN and tries to attach it. It fails with the following error

Create VMFS datastore

A specified parameter was not correct: spec.vmfs.majorVersion

I can go back and add storage by choosing the disk/lun after the process completes and it works fine. The only difference I could see then is that prior to ESXi 6, the datastore was formatted in VMFS version 3.6 and then I could upgrade to 5.5. Now it creates a VMFS 5.61 disk and I am thinking that the API is having trouble with it? Not sure if I make sense. please let me know if you have encountered something similar.

I updated my host running ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1 update 2...and have been down ever since..

Call "PropertyCollector.CreateFilter" for object "ha-property-collector" on ESX "XX.XXX.XXX.XXX failed."

After googling for three straight days...no luck.  Even have a support request with VMWare, but thought I would reach out here as well.

Anyone...?  Before I reinstall...

Workstation 12 Windows 10 host, USB 3 device not seen on Windows 7 guest

Now Fixed

I just installed Workstation 12 in the hope that the USB devices would work (they were very sporadic on Workstation 11).

The USB device is a USB 3 SSD (Identified as Kingston SSD by vmware workstation).

In the preferences for USB I do not see a USB 3.0 support, it is set to 2.

Is there a way of setting up for the USB 3 support?  vmware tools are installed.

I get an indication that the device is connected, Windows attempts to install something, then a message comes up the device is not connected to its ideal controller. The USB device does not appear in the guest.

Similar behaviour appears to occur with a linux guest- the USB device does not appear.

A USB  2 stick appears to work properly, both Windows and Linux.

Answer: I had to update the Windows 7 guest VM to vmware Workstation 12 compatibilty;

then change the USB type to 3.0;

then download the drivers identified in the USB devices tab

Hi,

I have just registered for a vCloud subscription for testing purposes. But I got a mail today that I dont understand. I says: This notification is to inform you that our records show that you started consuming resources for VMware vCloud Air .

This is a On-Demand service subscription and I haven't created any VM´s. Do we still get charged something every month for network etc even if I dont turn on or create any VM?

Cannot delete VDC. Get message: You must remove all catalogs backed by this VDC before you can delete it (catalogs: default-catalog).

Hi,

I have recently created a vCloud air subscription and I accidentally created two virtual data centers. I want to delete one of them, but I get this message: You must remove all catalogs backed by this VDC before you can delete it (catalogs: default-catalog).

I dont find any link or object to delete the catalogs and I the only info on the web is these two links that does not actually explain this message.

Links: http://www.gabesvirtualworld.com/vcloud-cant-delete-organizational-vdc/

I dont want to delete my whole organisation since I want to keep one of the VDC but I only want to delete one of them.

VMware workstation 12 pro - Guests w/Visual studio 2013 crash on start up from suspended

Host OS: Win 7 -64

Guests: Win 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 -64

Both guests running Visual Studio 2013 and SQL server 2014. I have tired to disable Hyper-V (VS emulators) on the guests but same result. Other Server2012/Win8.1 guests without VS 2013 are working 100%. Problem apply for both Workstation and Player 12 pro. Both guests have no issues under VMware 11.

Anybody with the same experience?

Thanks in advance.

vmware player firmware efi, boot menu delay?

$

I entered in the machine's vmx file

firmware="efi"

Now my questions are, when do I have to press ESC to access the boot menu, and is bios.bootdelay="5555" needed?

Specifically (and to circle around the question in various ways)

do I have to press ESC before the vmware logo appears, or in the first 5.555 seconds of the vmware logo? is the bootdelay counted from the moment the vmware logo appears? Is there an ESC time window anyway? Is there documentation about accessing the efi boot menu?

I'm able to access to boot menu by pressing ESC many times, but I'm unsure and did not find it in Google.

Thanks.

Workstation 10: USB devices disappear from removable devices menu

$

I'm using Workstation 10.0.7 build-2844087 on a Windows 7 x64 host. Occasionally the USB devices section will disappear on the Removable Devices menu in the Workstation software in the host. This almost always happens the same way:

- Host: I physically reconnect a device that I had physically disconnected earlier and was used by the guest.

- Guest: I see that the device does not appear, so I go to Workstation Removable Devices menu and I see the device is checked (meaning it should appear in the guest).

- Host: I select the device in the menu anyway in an attempt to toggle it.

- Host: I reopen the Workstation Removable Devices menu and poof all USB devices are no longer listed.

Some ways I've tried to work around this issue that haven't worked:

- Host: Restarting the VMWare USB arbitration service

- Host: Closing and reopening Workstation while leaving the VM running.

- Guest: Restarting VMWare tools service and VMWare tools user mode.

The only workaround I have is to suspend the guest and then resume it which takes a lot of time and slows things down considerably.

Why would allocating 3 of 4 cores to a Win7 VM cause "slow performance of... the virtual machine"?

$

I'm running a VM containing Windows 7 SP 1.

Formerly it was configured to use 2 of the 4 cores of my MacBook Pro.  I want to squeeze more performance out of the VM, so I increased the number of allocated cores to 3.  That causes the following warning to be displayed in the dialog:

"The virtual machine is configured to use too many of the processor cores available on your Mac.  This may cause slow performance of your Mac and the virtual machine."

Obviously, assigning resources to the VM 'takes them away from' OS X, and so it could cause slow performance of the computer.

But it makes no sense that assigning 3 of 4 cores to the VM would cause slow performance of the VM.

I have 2 questions:

What is the technical reason for the message to be displayed when assigned to a VM 3 of the 4 cores of a MBP?

Has anyone run into problems when running a Windows VM when it is assigned to use 3 of the 4 cores of their MBP?

WS 12 degraded 3D performance from WS 11 in Guest

$

Hi;

I'm trying out WS 12.0.1, and decided to see how much the 3D performance of WS 12 has been improved over WS 11. I seem to be finding that the performance has actually gone down. This is on a Windows 7 pro 64-bit  host (Nvidia GTX 780 using 358.91 drivers) running a Windows 7 64 guest.

  Are others seeing this?

I tried running a few benchmarks I had lying around. Here are the results:

Unigine 'Heaven 2.1', DirectX 9 setting, (1920 x 1200)

-------------------------------------------

   WS 11 with Guest at Hardware version 11:  Score= 1,806 / 71.7 FPS

   WS 12 with Guest Hardware version 12   :  Score= 1,107 / 43.9 FPS (Seems 'Jerkier' than under WS 11)

FutureMark 3DMark06, Directx 9 (I think) (1920 x 1200)

--------------------------------------------------

WS 11 with Guest at Hardware version 11:  Score= 18,157

   WS 12 with Guest Hardware version 12   :  Score= 14,845

Furmark 1.17.0 (OpenGL) (using HD 1080 benchmark preset)

----------------------------------

   WS 11 with Guest at Hardware version 11:  Score= 3,250  / 54 FPS

   WS 12 with Guest Hardware version 12   :  Score=  2,599 / 43

RTHDRIBL 1.2 (DirectX 9) (1920 x 1200)

-----------------------------------

WS 11 with Guest at Hardware version 11:  206 FPS

WS 12 with Guest Hardware version 12   :   93 FPS

So far, it looks like I'm seeing 3D performance degradation in every test I try.

I'm not sure if the WS 12 runs are using graphics features that the Workstation 11 ones are not. But if so, It's not immediately obvious.

This is using the 'recommended' 1GB of video ram size specified in VM Guest settings. (My actual video card has 3,072 MB of Video RAM).

I'm hoping I'm missing something, because my understanding was that Workstation 12 was supposed to have 'improved' 3D performance.

  Thanks

Workstation 12 Sound when changing Guest between windowed and Fullscreen

$

Hi;

I'm trying out Workstation 12 Pro. I've been using Workstation 11 on a Windows 7 Pro 64-bit host.

I tried using a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit Guest which had been running hardware version 8 with Workstation 11. I updated it to hardware version 12, and installed the WS 12 Guest tools.

I've noticed that now I hear a sound being generated (not sure if it's from the Host or Guest) when I change the Guest from Full-Screen to Windowed. ('Enter Full screen mode' and 'Exit Fullscreen mode').

This didn't happen under Workstation 11.

Is this new for WS 12, Is there a setting for this, or am I missing something obvious?

  Thanks.

Can't print on VMWare Workstation 12 Player and Windows 10

I am running VMW Workstation 12 Player, the printer icon on the top right toolbar is shows a printer as present, the box on virtual printing is ticked in Player/File/Preferences and it shows as 'Present' in Player/Manage/Virtual Machine Settings. Connected and Connect at power on are also both ticked.

However, when I want to print, a message comes up "Before you can perform printer-related tasks... you need to install a printer. Do you want to install one now?"

When I then try to install a printer it can't find one despite that I can print from W10 to a network printer.

Please can you help.

Many thanks

vRealize Automation 6.2.1 - Unable to create services in Catalog Management

$

Hello Admins,

I created a blueprint and would like to create a service for it through Catalog Management. I noticed when I try to create a service through IAASADMIN user, the "Add" button is greyed out and when I try to create a service through the TENANTADMIN user, am able to get the "Add" service button. But as soon as I click on the Add button, I get re-directed to the current user inbox menu.

Am curious if this is a kind of permission issue with TENANTADMIN user, as am able to do all operations fine with both the users, but only when I try to create a service, it flashes the create page and quickly redirects me to the user inbox. I tried to start/stop/restart many IaaS web server services but had no luck.

Please help.

Regards

Taz~
