Adding a USB device (flash drive) from a client running vSphere Client to an ESXi VM

Hi All,

OS running the vSphere client: Windows 7

VM Guest OS: Windows 2008 R2

ESXi version: 5.0.0.469512

This should, as far as I can tell, be pretty straight forward.

  1. I ensure that a USB controller has been added the Guest OS. This is indeed correct. In fact, I removed the controller and you can see the the USB controller is remoive from Device Manager on the Guest OS
  2. I add a USB device to my Windows 7 client once I have the vSphere client up and running
  3. I select the relevant Guest OS running on the ESXi host within the vSphere client, then click the USB icon, and connect to the relevant USB device. In this case a USB flash drive.

Problem is, I only see one USB device listed in the vSphere client (which is a Broadcom SmardCard reader).

What am I doing wrong? I have tried a multitude of flash drives, but none of them show up in the vSphere client - they connect fine to the client OS.

I'm sure I have done this before an not had any issue. Anyhow, any help gratefully received.

Chris
