FileVault 2 not working correctly in OS X VMs with VM disks set to Bus Type: SATA

I built a new 10.8.5 VM in VMware Fusion 6.0 Pro for use with FileVault 2 testing and ran into an odd issue where FileVault 2 wouldn't turn on correctly. The eventual fix was that I needed to switch from using SATA to SCSI in the hard disk settings.

Once I switched to using SCSI, I was able to build a new VM where FileVault 2 worked properly.
