Trying to run on a new iMac a virtual machine created on a Macbook Pro ...

As the title says, I have a virtual machine created on a Macbook Pro Core i7 2.2 GHz (I7-4770HQ) using VMWare Fusion 8. Now I have a new iMac Core i5 3.7 GHz (I5-9600K) and I installed on it VMWare Fusion 8. When I try to open the virtual machine in the iMac I have an error message saying that the host does not support CPUID faulting. Before trying this, I switched off (shutdown) the virtual machine. There are not snapshots nor lock files. However I cannot make it run on the new iMac under the same version of VMWare Fusion and macOS (10.14.5).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

VROPS automated action failed to run on VM

Dear community member,

I am facing an issue during automating an action in vROPS. I have created an action which would add the CPU if a VM has > 80% CPU usage. When the alert is thrown, the tasks are initialized but on vSphere the task fails with an error for Guest OS shutdown "A general system error occurred: Invalid fault". Kindly provide your insight on this:

1. VROPS Alerts triggered:

I'm trying to run vmware workstation 15 on a Ubuntu 18.04 box with Mint installed. I've got the VM set up and working, but when i - from the command line - type

vmware -x "path to vmx" nogui

I get "Gtk Warning Cannot open display"

Shouldn't nogui take care of the display issue?

Thanks!

Tried reinstalling Agent and removing and reenabling VMtools USB and PS2 driver. Tried Logitech and 3DConnexion hardware.

Anybody knows what to do?

vCenter 6.7 Backup not working when IPv6 enabled

Hello,

i just upgraded my test environment to vCenter 6.7 and tested the new Backup Task, but it don't work.

In /var/log/vmware/applmgmt/backup.log i found:

ERROR: BackupManager encountered an exception: While reading from '/etc/systemd/network/10-eth0.network' [line  7]: option 'gateway' in section 'Network' already exists

And the file looks like that:

root@srv10 [ /var/log/vmware/applmgmt ]# cat /etc/systemd/network/10-eth0.network

[Match]

Name=eth0

[Network]

Gateway=2a02:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx::250

Gateway=192.168.99.1

Address=2a02:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx::20/64

Address=192.168.99.20/24

IPv6AcceptRouterAdvertisements=false

DHCP=no

[DHCP]

UseDNS=false

It must be a bug in the backup function...

Kind regards

Stefan

L1 Terminal Fault Patch Question

Hi,

I'm new to ESXi and I've just installed 6.7 Update 2.

I was reading: VMSA-2018-0020

There appears to be some patches (including cpu-microcode) updates:

ESXi670-201808401-BG (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/56537)

ESXi670-201808402-BG (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/56538)

ESXi670-201808403-BG (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/56897)

I'm assuming these have been rolled into 6.7 Update 2 but I actually haven't found a way to confirm this.

I can list all the VIBs installed on my system using esxcli but I don't know where to go from here.

I've also enabled the SCAv1 scheduler.

Is there a way to know if I'm patched against this?

Thanks.

Vcenter confusion

Hi all,

Being fairly new to Vmware;  I have so far found the online forums and help very good, but I have now hit a bit of a brickwall on one matter and I am hoping the hive mind can help me.

I inherited a smallish virtual estate when I joined my current company; 3 HP servers on a HP build of ESXi 6.7. The servers are deployed over 2 physical locations and host a variety of Windows and Linux virtual machines as part of the internal IT set up. There is a server hosting production VMs on each site and one site has as additional server which only hosts replicas VMs which are produced and maintained by the backup software; Nakivo.

All 3 ESXi hosts are effectively standalone, no clustering or fail over was set up.

I built a vcenter appliance and it sites on one server. I attached baselines and scanned the 3 esxi servers and have staged and remediated 2 of them. The Pre-check Remediation report on the last server is moaning about "VMware vCenter Server is installed on the virtual machine and DRS is disabled on the cluster."

So I read up on this and it says about creating a cluster enabling DRS and HA. Which I have done but I get message about datastore conflicts when I try to add the hosts into the cluster etc. I dont want to mess up my vitual environment so I am hoping I might be able to get some advice please.

Thanks

UEM 9.7, Windows 10 LTSC, Mandatory profiles and Start Menu programs list issue.

$

Hello,

I've got a strange issue with the programs list on my Windows 10 LTSC golden image. When i login the start menu is blank only showing the Search & Settings windows 10 apps (screenshot 1). In the UEM logs i can see all of my shortcuts, desktop and programs folder, are being created successfully. I can also see them in the Start Menu\Programs directory in ProgramData. Here's the weird part, if i delete one of the shortcuts on the desktop for e.g. Word or Excel the programs list suddenly springs into life (screenshot 2).

Im not trying to do anything fancy with roaming the start menu or applying an XML for the tiles, just want basic functionality!

So just for a bit of background on the steps ive tried so far...

- Tried with and without the Logon Task - Delete Windows 6.x Start Menu, no effect.

- Tried running the shortcuts async and non async (not that it should matter)

- Tried with and without the Mandatory profile by disabling the group policy setting, no change.

- Tried redirecting the Programs Menu in redirected folders to the users profile, didnt make a difference.

- Checked permissions on Start Menu stuff (before and after shortcut deletion), no change.

- Tried running a delayed batch script to delay run to delete a dummy UEM created shortcut to load the start menu as a workaround, didn't work.

any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Upgrade from HZ 7.4 to 7.9 leaves user unable to connect to desktops.

Just had an interesting issue with my customer - An upgrade from 7.4 to 7.9 left users unable to connect to their desktops. Connection to broker URL is fine, but once a user selects a tile, the HZ client hangs and will not connect. Tested PCoIP and BEAT (didn't test RDP).  Changed some common denominators, but same result.  Just wondering if anyone out there has run into this issue.  It's fresh and I have not spent much time troubleshooting it yet, so if anyone has a cause/answer, I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences.

vCD 9.7 Installation Issues

$

I'm reaching out to the community because I'm at my wits end at deploying the vCD 9.7 OVA using all the methods available. Some info:

  • I have deployed a NFS server and can confirm the permissions, etc are all correct (more on this later)
  • I have deployed a RabbitMQ server
  • Am using VMware_vCloud_Director-9.7.0.4343-14046945_OVF10.ova
  • Am testing all this in a nested VMware ESXi installation on VMware Workstation
  • Am attempting to deploy the first primary small appliance with embedded DB
  • I have forward and reverse DNS resolution entries for the vCD cell

So I've tried the following:

  • Deploying the OVA to my vESXi host simply by following the bouncing ball and supplying all required information when deploying a VM from OVF/OVA file. All seems fine and I can login to the VAMI on port 5480 however I get the dreaded "no nodes found in the cluster" error in the vCD Database Availability tab.

When I login to the console, and view the setupvcd.log file I get the following:

And the contents of the update-appliance-type.log file

Both log files imply that I have not selected a valid cell type yet I am 100% certain that I chose "primary small" during the OVA deployment.

I can confirm that the vCD cell can reach the NFS transfer server, has mounted the NFS share and that it has successfully written to the directory.

I can also confirm that the user and group ownership are correct.

  • Getting sick and tired of typing the same thing over and over again during the UI OVA wizard, I tried deploying the OVA to my vESXi host using the ovftool using the same parameters. Now, after powering on I get the following start job which never succeeds and I am left with a non-functioning vCD instance.

This times out and eventually I get to the VAMI screen saying the networking is not configured. Basically the vCD appliance is useless at this point. I cannot even login using the credentials I used during the OVA deployment. Nothing much can be done besides deleting the appliance and starting again.

Here's a copy of the ovftool syntax I'm using. It reflects the same properties I'm using during the UI deployment.

VSAN - intermittent network issues

$

Have a new build cluster of Dell 730s and 740s, 14 total. 3 dis switches configured, data for VMs, VSAN and vMotion. Each has a primary 10G  and secondary 10G link with jumbo MTU on all but the data. So my issue is are hosts are continually throwing alarms for ping health and big MTU but then resolves and then comes back on another or multiple hosts, then goes away. Also seeing portion errors every so often. Typically it seems stable when nothing is happening, no users on VM’s. Also, having failures when publishing, seems to get to last step and fails, with logs showing something about error cloning..

So a couple questions, obviously something’s up with my network but what? We’ve verified MTU size and can ping with from each host to  the next with the -s 9000 without issue. So here’s the rest of the environment, we don’t have EVC on, can’t without jumping through some hoops as VC is on our hosts. So was wondering if different hardware sets could cause network and publishing issues? Oir hosts have different intel chips and greater storage. When we tried to vMotion a running vm from a 730 to a 740 it fails, so I know we need to get EVC turned on, but does anyone think that will cure our other issues?

"Internal error" - VM works on one machine but not after moving to another

I'm running Fusion 7.1.3 on two different Macs -- my MacBook Pro and iMac. On the MBP my VMs work fine, but after copying them to a USB drive and then to the iMac, they fail to start, resulting in the "Internal error" message on resume attempt. I also tried copying one of the VMs via wi-fi and had the same result.

I see some posts about file systems... My Macs and the spinning USB drive are all formatted the same, APFS.

Any idea what's going on here? Why do they work on one machine but generate an error (a very poorly worded one at that) on another?

thanks

macOS Catalina issue [beta]

Hello.  I installed the new macOS 10.15 beta today, and loaded fusion to find that my Windows 7 VM boots up and runs just fine, but only shows a black screen. I can see it in the library and even use it by typing, moving the mouse around in the black screen, and watching in the library but that's all. Has anyone experienced this before? I've tried reinstalling Fusion, to no avail. It also doesn't show anything during post/boot, so it's not a video driver issue I don't think.

- Accelerate 3D Graphics is NOT checked.

- I receive NO error messages.

Bug in the ESXi 6.7 U2 Interface?

$

Hi,

I've just done a clean install of ESXi 6.7 U2 and created a VM.

From the web interface, when I click from Host->Monitor screen to the Virtual Machines tab I see "Warning" on the status tab.

However, if I click "Refresh", the status changes to "Normal". It stays as normal with multiple refreshes. If I click away from the Virtual Machines tab and come back to it, the Warning returns.

Is this expected behaviour and is there any way I can get more information about the Warning? I've had a look in the interface and can't see anything obviously wrong.

Is this in fact a bug in the interface?

Thanks.
