CEPH is a SDS(Software Defined Storage) solution that is capable of exposing storage capacity as block, object and file(POSIX).
Recently there have been added support for iSCSI targets.
According to reliable sources, the only thing stopping official vSphere support in the next release, due this year, is an accept from VMware, to use the VASA and VAAI API's in this opensource based solution.
Here is a few reasons why I really would like to have CEPH supported in vSphere, in the next release of RHES (RedHat Enterprise Storage)
- It adds the ability to go SDS without going hyper-converged.
- It does n-way replication, sync and/or a-sync.
- It does Erasure coding.
- It scales from 3 nodes.
- It scales to multiple PB - here's a link to a 30PB test at CERN in 2015 https://cds.cern.ch/record/2015206/files/CephScaleTestMarch2015.pdf
- It's widespread in the openstack world.
