I have a ESXi 6.0 host with direct attached SAS SSDs for storage, 4x 10Gb NICs and a low workload.
I have guests that are a mix of Windows 2012 R2 and 2016 file servers, they are installed as server cores. All of them have the VMXnet3 NIC. and the fileservers are so slooooowwwww when accessing files over the network. I am trying to enable RSS, because the documentation says VMXnet3 can do RSS, however windows reports differently
The main way that I see it, is the file list will come up immediately, however, the icon draw on 100 files may take 1 minute to complete. We have a total of 4 hosts, all configured the same way, and they too are experiencing this issue.
Questions:
1. Why is windows reporting that the VMXnet3 NIC is not RSS capable
2. Anyone have insight to the crazy slowness we're experiencing on a host with 40Gb network I/O?
