Ubuntu 16.04 runs terrible as VMWare Guest

As the title says I'm struggling with (terrible) performance on my Ubuntu Guest VM. I'm running VMWare Workstation 12 on a Windows 10 x64 host. The host should be more than capable of running this VM, and in fact runs other, more demanding Windows- and Linux based VMs fine.

Given that "all other" guest VMs runs fine, I assume the problem is with my Ubuntu installation. I've recently installed it using VMWare's auto / simple installation and also made sure I've updated VMWare-tools. I've never had this problem with other Ubuntu installations on VMWare before, so I'm not sure where to begin troubleshooting.

By terrible performance I mean: Input lag (up to 3-400 ms input latency), slow animations (especially when switching virtual desktops) and general "sluggishness". There are also graphical glitches occurring at infrequent intervals ("see-trough"; sections of a window will disappear and show the window in the background).

Host specifications

- i7-6700HQ, 2.6Ghz

- 32Gb memory

- PCI-e nvme SSD

- Geforce GTX 960M

Guest (VM)

- 1 cpu, 2 cores

- 8Gb memory

- Single image, 80Gb
