VLAN question

I have virtualized a ESX server in vmware worksation 9 and have 1 VM running - the standard switch has a port group for vlan 2 - I have connected the dedicated NIC for this vSwitch to a cisco 3550 switch for vlan testing - it is configured as a L3 with an IP address on the vlan 2 interface.

I have set switch port access to vlan 2 and the VM has the ip address of the vlan 2 interface as gateway. Hpwever I am unable to ping. The physical nic on my workstation is a real tek one.

As I am testing only one VM i think i do not need an intervlan trunking. Any idea?

Do I need trunking on the standard switch? I have tried both set the physical port to trunk and access - no success.

Thanks
