I have an ESXi 5.1 server setup that boots off a usb stick and has a datastore using a six drive RAID 6 array on a MegaRaid 9240-8i card. It works fine. Before going into production, I thought I'd see what happened if a drive failed (in my case, I just pulled a hot-swap drive out.
There is no apparent notice of this failure in vSphere Client. No warnings in the Configuration - Health Status. Nothing in the event log. Nothing anywhere else. ESXi seems to be oblivous to the missing drive.
How to get to notice of such failures? (I understand that vSphere Client can't profive email notice)
