Using ESXi 5.1 with dual Broadcom NetExtreme II 10Gbe adapters operating as hardware iSCSI adapters and network adapters. Have a Core cluster which is on same subnet as iSCSI target (IBM v7000) and a DMZ cluster which is on different subnet. We are using a single vDS on each cluster. Core adapters connected successfully using iSCSI port binding with full Round Robin multipathing as desired.
However cannot connect the DMZ iSCSI hardware adapters on the different subnet so have been advised that only option is to use iSCSI software adapter which connects fine. in line with VMware best practice we have not used iSCSI port binding as this will not allow routing across subnets so have a single path per target which we believed was using both underlying hardware adapters. When we test each path by disabling an adapter the path shows DEAD when one of the adapters is disabled suggesting that we have no multipathing set up or it is set up incorrectly.
Does anyone have experience with setting up iSCSI hardware adapters or software adapter on a vDS to a target on different subnet so that multipathing works. We have compatible vmk virtual adapters with a single uplink and no standby uplinks. Full routing is enabled between the two subnets.
