Hello-
Lately a few of our ESXi 5.0.0 hosts have been crashing unexpectedly. In trying to troubleshoot the issues I was told by VMware that since our hosts do not have persistent storage the log files are lost when the hosts reboot since they are stored in ramdisk. Support had us add a path to the Syslog.global.logDir. as a way to capture critical log files remotely. We were also told to add a value to the ScratchConfig to send files there too. (this second part doesn't seem to be working and I think it might be because I am setting a value already at the Syslog.global.logDir location)
This morning I had another crash and when we called support I was told that the log files I need are still not available. Data is being sent to the Syslog.global.log Dir location but evidently still not the ones I need. Google has indicated I might need to install the Syslog Collector form the vCenter install, but I wanted to ask the forums first on best practices for gather the logs I will need to troubleshoot ESXi crashes? Is Syslog Collector the answer or should I be okay with what I have already?
Thank you in advance...erik
