VM workstation back up solution

Hi all

Im a newbie with Vmware and im facing with some problem with back up solution:

Im running a important service in a VM workstation 7 and my task is back up this virtual machine.

Im planning to take a full copy of directory of VMware folder to my storage and take a snapshot of vm machine.

But i read this document of VMware"VMware KB:    Best practices when backing up a VMware Workstation virtual machine  " told that: , just can copy while virtual machine power off or suppend. But i still copy all directory while server still run. So what is the diffirent between i copy all directory while virtual machine is turned off and do these thing while virtual machine still run normally.

About snapshot, as i understand, the snapshot just include STATE of memory, vm setting, disk at the time you take snapshot. The most important file i think is VMDK file, event without other file, just have vmdk file, i still can build an new virtual machine with existing disk (the vmdk file which i told). Am i correct?

Thank you!!!
