Hi,
I am trying to get VMware Tools working for Yosemite (10.10.5) guest VM but cannot get File Sharing or graphics (higher than 1024x768) to work; this is what I did:
- Used "Install OS X Yosemite" dmg file created from downloaded app via Apple App Store while it was available, OS X version 10.10.5
- Mounted the dmg file on host OS
- Create new VM
- Selected the Installation Method: "Install from disc or image" and clicked Continue
- Clicked: "Use another disc or disc image..."
- Selected: "Install OS X Yosemite.app" inside mounted dmg file from step 2
- Accepting VM defaults:
- Guest Operating System: OS X 10.10
- New Hard Disk: Capacity 40 GB
- Memory: 2 GB
- Networking: Share with my Mac (NAT)
- Device Summary: 2 CPU cores, CD/DD, USB Controller, Sound Card
- Clicked: "Finish"
- Named VM: "OS X 10.10 Yosemite.vmwarevm"
- Clicked: "Save" and waited for "Creating installation medium... This may take a few minutes" to complete
- Selected "Use English for the main language"
- Double-Clicked: "Install OS X"
- Clicked: "Continue" (To setup the installation of OS X 10.10, click Continue)
- Clicked: "Agree" to terms of software license agreement and clicked "Agree" again
- Selected: "Macintosh HD" and clicked Install (and waited for it to complete)
- Selected :"United States" and clicked Continue
- Selected: "U.S." keyboard layout and clicked Continue
- Selected: "Don't transfer any information now" and clicked Continue
- Selected: "Don't sign in" to Apple ID and clicked Continue and Skip
- Clicked: "Agree" to Terms and Conditions
- Created computer account:
- Full name: user
- Account name: user
- Password: user
- Hint: <Left blank>
- Checked: "Set time zone based on current location"
- Clicked: "Continue"
- Unchecked: "Send diagnostics & usage data to Apple" and clicked Continue
- From VMware Fusion menu, selected: Virtual Machine -> Install VMware Tools and clicked Install
- Double-clicked: "Install VMware Tools"
- Clicked: "Continue" to "This package was signed with an invalid certificate. This package might not install what you expect. Do you want to continue with the installation anyway?"
- Clicked: "Continue" to "Introduction"
- Clicked: "Install" to "Installation Type" and authenticated with "user" account and password and clicked Install Software
- Clicked: "Continue Installation" to message "When this software finishes installing, you must restart your computer. tAr you sure you want to install the software now?"
- Clicked: "Restart" to message "The installation was successful. The software was installed. Click Restart to finish installing the software."
- Signed into "user" account after restart
- VM Froze at Login screen
- Restarted VM via VMware Fusion menu Virtual Machine -> Restart
- Signed into "user" account after restart (This time it did not freeze)
- Opened: "System Preferences" -> Displays
- Selected: "Scaled" Resolution but only "1024 x 768" is available
- Opened VM Settings via VMware Fusion menu Virtual Machine -> Settings...
- Clicked: "Sharing" under "System Settings"
- Checked "Enable Shared Folders", "VMware Shared Folders" shortcut shows up on desktop but with standard OS X folder icon, not VMware
- Clicked: "+" to add shared folder, selected "Downloads" from left side column, and clicked Add
- Checked: "On" for Downloads and closed Settings window
- Opened Desktop shortcut: "VMware Shared Folders"
- Folder is empty
- Confirmed with Terminal app, via Finder -> Applications -> Utilities
users-Mac:~ user$ ls -la /Volumes/VMware\ Shared\ Folders/
total 0

users-Mac:~ user$
VMware tools seems to be installed:
Physical setup/configuration
- 2015 MacBook Pro 15-Inch, 16 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD
- Two Apple Thunderbolt Displays 27-Inch
- Catalina 10.15.3, APFS Case-sensitive, Encrypted
- VMware Fusion Pro 11.5.1
I should have mentioned initially, VMware Tools works just fine for all other OS X / macOS distributions as a guest VM. These issues only happen for Yosemite.
Anybody else experienced this or has any clue why it is not working?
