Hi,

I am trying to get VMware Tools working for Yosemite (10.10.5) guest VM but cannot get File Sharing or graphics (higher than 1024x768) to work; this is what I did:

  1. Used "Install OS X Yosemite" dmg file created from downloaded app via Apple App Store while it was available, OS X version 10.10.5
  2. Mounted the dmg file on host OS
  3. Create new VM
  4. Selected the Installation Method: "Install from disc or image" and clicked Continue
  5. Clicked: "Use another disc or disc image..."
  6. Selected: "Install OS X Yosemite.app" inside mounted dmg file from step 2
  7. Accepting VM defaults:
    1. Guest Operating System: OS X 10.10
    2. New Hard Disk: Capacity 40 GB
    3. Memory: 2 GB
    4. Networking: Share with my Mac (NAT)
    5. Device Summary: 2 CPU cores, CD/DD, USB Controller, Sound Card
  8. Clicked: "Finish"
  9. Named VM: "OS X 10.10 Yosemite.vmwarevm"
  10. Clicked: "Save" and waited for "Creating installation medium... This may take a few minutes" to complete
  11. Selected "Use English for the main language"
  12. Double-Clicked: "Install OS X"
  13. Clicked: "Continue" (To setup the installation of OS X 10.10, click Continue)
  14. Clicked: "Agree" to terms of software license agreement and clicked "Agree" again
  15. Selected: "Macintosh HD" and clicked Install (and waited for it to complete)
  16. Selected :"United States" and clicked Continue
  17. Selected: "U.S." keyboard layout and clicked Continue
  18. Selected: "Don't transfer any information now" and clicked Continue
  19. Selected: "Don't sign in" to Apple ID and clicked Continue and Skip
  20. Clicked: "Agree" to Terms and Conditions
  21. Created computer account:
    1. Full name: user
    2. Account name: user
    3. Password: user
    4. Hint: <Left blank>
    5. Checked: "Set time zone based on current location"
    6. Clicked: "Continue"
  22. Unchecked: "Send diagnostics & usage data to Apple" and clicked Continue
  23. From VMware Fusion menu, selected: Virtual Machine -> Install VMware Tools and clicked Install
  24. Double-clicked: "Install VMware Tools"
  25. Clicked: "Continue" to "This package was signed with an invalid certificate. This package might not install what you expect. Do you want to continue with the installation anyway?"
  26. Clicked: "Continue" to "Introduction"
  27. Clicked: "Install" to "Installation Type" and authenticated with "user" account and password and clicked Install Software
  28. Clicked: "Continue Installation" to message "When this software finishes installing, you must restart your computer. tAr you sure you want to install the software now?"
  29. Clicked: "Restart" to message "The installation was successful. The software was installed. Click Restart to finish installing the software."
  30. Signed into "user" account after restart
  31. VM Froze at Login screen
  32. Restarted VM via VMware Fusion menu Virtual Machine -> Restart
  33. Signed into "user" account after restart (This time it did not freeze)
  34. Opened: "System Preferences" -> Displays
  35. Selected: "Scaled" Resolution but only "1024 x 768" is available
  36. Opened VM Settings via VMware Fusion menu Virtual Machine -> Settings...
  37. Clicked: "Sharing" under "System Settings"
  38. Checked "Enable Shared Folders", "VMware Shared Folders" shortcut shows up on desktop but with standard OS X folder icon, not VMware
  39. Clicked: "+" to add shared folder, selected "Downloads" from left side column, and clicked Add
  40. Checked: "On" for Downloads and closed Settings window
  41. Opened Desktop shortcut: "VMware Shared Folders"
  42. Folder is empty
  43. Confirmed with Terminal app, via Finder -> Applications -> Utilities
  44. users-Mac:~ user$ ls -la /Volumes/VMware\ Shared\ Folders/

    total 0

    drwxr-xr-x+ 2 root  admin   68 Feb 26 13:53 .

    drwxrwxrwt@ 4 root  admin  136 Feb 26 13:53 ..

    users-Mac:~ user$

VMware tools seems to be installed:

Physical setup/configuration

  • 2015 MacBook Pro 15-Inch, 16  GB RAM, 2 TB SSD
  • Two Apple Thunderbolt Displays 27-Inch
  • Catalina 10.15.3, APFS Case-sensitive, Encrypted
  • VMware Fusion Pro 11.5.1

I should have mentioned initially, VMware Tools works just fine for all other OS X / macOS distributions as a guest VM. These issues only happen for Yosemite.

Anybody else experienced this or has any clue why it is not working?
