IMPORTANT:Before you begin, open your Downloads folder and check for any existing versions of the McAfee installer .dmg files. If you find any, rename the file. An older copy of the installer .dmg in your Downloads folder could result in your Mac using the wrong installer and preventing your product from successfully activating.
Downloading the Installer
- Open a web browser, and go to mcafee.com/activate
- Click My Account, Sign In.
- Type in your McAfee credentials and click Log in.
- Under My Apps, select McAfee Internet Security.
- Click Download under Protect all your devices.
- To continue, click I've read and accept the McAfee License Agreement.
- If a serial number is visible under the Download button, write it down. You will need it later to activate your product.
NOTE: The serial number is only valid for two hours. If you want to install your product later, or the serial number expires, you need to generate a new number.
If the webpage is still open, simply refresh the page in your browser. If the page has expired, repeat the steps 1–7. - Click Download. The file is saved to your default location, which usually is your Downloads folder.
Installing McAfee Internet Security for Mac
- Locate the folder in which you downloaded the McAfee-MacInstaller-x.x.dmg file, and double-click it to open it.
- Double-click the McAfee-MacInstaller-x.x.dmg file.
- Close your browsers (Safari and Chrome) during installation to ensure that the McAfee browser plug-in installs correctly.
- To start the installation, double-click the McAfee-MacInstaller icon.
NOTE: Click Open if you see a warning that the installer was downloaded from the Internet. - Type your Mac administrator credentials if prompted.
- Type the Serial Number that you made a note of earlier, in the appropriate field in the installer window. Wait while the Installer downloads, scans your computer, and installs the product.
- To activate your software, follow the on-screen instructions, and then click Finish to complete the installation.
- Depending on your version of macOS and Safari, either Safari opens or you see a pop-up message:
- Click Trust when Safari requests access
- Enable the McAfee SiteAdvisor extension if you are prompted in a Safari Extension window
NOTE: On the first installation of McAfee Internet Security, the firewall running on your Mac might display a warning pop-up message. If you see this message and you are installing on your Mac at home, select Home or Work. When the installation is complete, the McAfee firewall creates a default network ruleif you did not see this pop-up message, or if you did not set the network type to Home or Work
Configuring Internet Security for Mac
NOTE: When the network rule is set to Public, access to local resources might be affected. If your network uses a private IP address range, perform the following steps to change the network type in this rule to Home and Office:
- Click the McAfee Security icon.
- Select McAfee Internet Security Preferences.
- Click the Firewall icon if it is not selected.
- Click the padlock icon if it is locked, and type your Mac's administrator credentials.
- Under the Type drop-down option, change the Type from Public to Home or Work.
- Click the Red button to close the window.
