ESXi 6.5: VM will not start - Question Pending - Disk Full. No room to expand.

Hi,

When a VM does not power up because a virtual disk is full is causing me lot of concern over using ESXi. I doubt this would be a problem with a standalone machine because I would be able to login and recover the issue by deleting files. I need to know how I can avoid this issue in the future - because disk usage is always expanding!

I have a problem with a full datastore that is a virtual data drive for a VM (not the actual VM itself, but purely data). Unfortunately there are no files within the datastore which could be deleted - there was only the oversize VMDK and there is no room to expand. Basically the VMDK was the full size of the Raid array and there was nothing else on that array. (No snapshots or logs).

Does anyone have any suggestions as to:

1. I can recover the VMDK without copying to another area (it is 1.8TB)

2. Preventing the VMDK from growing too big to work

Thanks
